What’s boxing day

December 26 (first day after Xmas), it's sort of like a 2nd day of Xmas in some countries but is mainly just used as an excuse for an extended holiday and more shopping deals.

More importantly, the WJC traditionally starts on that day.

(@BeterChiarelli Props for the "Interstellar" poem tears of joy)

That is the most important thing. Now I don’t have anything to say about the world juniors to matt coronatos brother when I get back to school which has been postponed two days. So Wednesday is my first day back. Let’s go

Given that it's going to be somewhere from -3 to -15 degrees Fahrenheit on Saturday at the Winter Classic (which would be the coldest outdoor game in NHL history), the league plans to hand out 40,000 hand warmers to fans, have soup at the concession stands, and have heated benches, penalty boxes and ice. Yes, heated ice. Not a typo.

Buncha wimps. I played an entire outdoor tournament in -30 celsius when I was like 10. Just buy some under armour and an extra pair of gloves.

I played pond hockey all my life spanning from -10 to -30, and it was the norm. No one was freezing their asses off, maybe after like 4 hours of playing.

Let’s go capitals. 3-0 at the intermission. Backstrom has two points in 2 games. Welcome back. Great movement on and off the puck.

So NHL is cancelling some Canadian games not because of covid outbreaks or lack of playable players

Nope

Its because of the half capacity measures many Canadian cities have implemented

Was wondering why the Jan 3 and 6 games were cancelled

Well turns out the NHL does not want to see certain Canadian teams playing in half empty arenas for profit reasons.

Guess that makes sense as they want to increase the cap but still seems a tad odd lul. Anyways they are allowed to play road games in the USA so thats something I guess lul.

IIHF Will Attempt To Reschedule 2022 World Junior Championship

International Ice Hockey Federation president Luc Tardif told Russian outlet Championat on Wednesday that they’d like to reschedule the 2022 World Junior Championship, which was cancelled today due to a series of forfeited games at the tournament due to COVID cases among teams.

Tardif says that the summer of 2022 is the most likely outcome and that the tournament would likely stay in Canada. From a financial and television perspective, it would make sense to hold the tournament after the conclusion of the 2022 Stanley Cup Final in July.

Translated from Russian, Tardif had this to say on the tournament’s cancellation:

"The integrity of the tournament was violated, for reasons of player safety, we decided it was necessary to hold the [WJC] for real… Hockey is excellent, but the [Omicron] situation is disappointing. We preferred to end the tournament now, we will develop a proposal for all federations with new dates."

One important note from the interview is that teams will be able to modify their rosters for the tournament, should it be rescheduled. It’s big news for players like Finland’s Aatu Raty, who weren’t taken to the tournament due to testing positive for COVID during the selection process.

Tardif says he doesn’t know if the tournament will be held in a bubble this time around. To be fair, it’s impossible to predict the nature of COVID six months from now, and it’s therefore impossible to make a call on that front.

Still, optimism remains for these junior players to get an honest crack at medalling at the World Juniors in 2022. -ProHockeyRumors.com

big if true. Kinda exciting at least that they will finish it. Tho it shouldn’t have come to this, as they coulda had a proper plan in place.

Bordeleau may even finally make a incredible return - after missing two camps straight and roster selection due to COVID positive results. Would be a great story to see - and a huge + for the States team.

Seems like it's going to be restarted completely, they already confirmed they'd allow the teams to re-select new rosters if they wish, so sounds like they're starting fresh

Woah Matt Coronato’s brother goes to St. Anthony’s? That’s awesome. Not that anyone asked but my NHL connection of Long Island is that I know people who are friends with Charlie McAvoy’s sister

Sabres had UPL, Jokiharju, Tuch, Murray, Dahlin, and Thompson on the ice.

Average height is 6'4 lmao, respectively the heights are 6'6, 6', 6'4, 6'6, 6'3, 6'7. Hagg and Dahlin pairing would have been a 6'5 average height. or 6'4.7

He went there too. I saw this on elite prospects.com and then I realized his brother is on my football team, lacrosse team, and in my science class. I knew him but I didn’t know his name. I said to him that his brother should do what Adam fox did but go to the islanders because that’s his favorite team

Well Ovechkin is ahead of Matthews as well, so he wasn’t going to be handed it anyways.
