Barkov’s Selke year is a bad comparison, he didn’t deserve it when he won it. Same with Couturier honestly. Iirc those were the two years I was banging the Stone drum (at least one), but yeah, they weren’t actually elite defensively the years they won it, it was a carry over from being elite defensively for several of the previous years.

Also, on Campbell, he’s been a career (good) backup/1B who has ALREADY started 9 more games this season than his previous career high. Could be he’s just not a starter, just a high end tandem guy. Or he’s hurt.

No im saying in general Barkov's numbers werent great but he won the Selke. Not saying Matthews will but 2 bad games does not mean hes bad at defense. It happens to them all. Like analysts thought Bergeron was gonna win the Selke but Barkov stole it lul.

As for Campbell hes hit a rock and I have seen it before. Mostly has to do with the coach now. So Briere got some work to do. As those are routine saves and yet always in February whether its Reimer, Bernier, Freddie, and now Campbell/Mrazek February is always a struggle period. Also we changed our other assistant coaches and so far good results with our PP and PK being excellent. Briere has in my opinion been around long enough. Need a more experienced proper guy.

If Matthews is comparable to the year Barkov won the Selke, then he’s not going to win it. He needs like 3-5 years of being actually high end defensively (which he’s mostly been so far this year so this might be year 1) before getting considered for it, and he’ll likely end up winning it in a down year because the Selke voters are stupid.

He needs to be on the PK for me to be a true Selke candidate. And honestly if he PK/D while putting up those numbers there would be a good chance of being a strong nominee. Now would he get it no as Bergeron is on a revenge quest. Barkov technically should not have over Bergeron last season according to some but it happens sometimes

That's probably something the Leafs should tackle near the deadline. They need another top-4 defensive D-man, because Muzzin tends to be injured every time there's a need for one.

Not happening since Price still isn't healthy. Long-term retention (for more than like 1mil) is also never a good idea as that's a retention spot you lose for a long time and can hurt your cap space later ( Kessel and the Leafs retaining 1.2 for 7 years didn't work out great for them when they needed all the cap they could get ) and no one should want Price unless we retain a decent amount, he also has a NMC so he's stuck here imo

i assume any price trade would have to be with full retention because he's not worth more than $5.5m on a long term contract these days. good point about the retention slot habs might need those. i can see chiarot and lehky using one each and then there is the possibility the habs finally move on from petry, droiun, gallaher or hoffman.

Yeah, no team takes Price at 10.5 but Montreal also will not retain much on Price until he's maybe at like 2 years on his deal

Technically it could work if MTL takes in a bloated contract in return as well. Might not be need for a retention if they take in a huge contract of their own.
