Aggressive Rebuild

Created by: ash
Team: 2022-23 Winnipeg Jets
Initial Creation Date: Apr. 25, 2022
Published: Apr. 25, 2022
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
If management decides this core's window is closed, here's what I hope they do.
--
-New coaching staff (still hoping for Jukka Jalonen lol), management can stay for now.
-Heritage jerseys become our new Home/Away, a Thrashers inspired Reverse Retro becomes our alternate.
--
-Trade out Scheifele and Dubois for picks and prospects.
-Plan is for Perfetti/Lucius to become our 1-2 punch down the middle eventually.
-Retool the d-core, play one vet and one younger player on each pair.
-Sell aggressively at the deadline, including Wheeler (Untouchables: 27, 37, 44, 81).
-Tank for a year to get a high pick in the 2023 draft.
-Build a new core around our swathe of acquired picks/prospects.
-Start competing again in 2023-24, hopefully become a consistent playoff team from 2024-25 onward.

Yeah I was struggling to get the value of this trade right. Only problem with Norlinder is that the Jets need RD waaay more than LD lol.

I'd definitely do the deal as is. I think it's even lacking something going to WPG, but it's refreshing to see WPG fans not asking for the 1st overall pick.

Minnesota declines. They aren't taking on blake wheeler when they aren't trying to get older or have any need for winger. A person whose well over mid 30 and injury prone and expensive isn't getting that from anyone, nor Minnesota

Oof. The rebuild would take forever if the Jets accept such poor returns for Scheifele and Dubois.

I really like this idea. Jets would need to know if hellebuyck was committed to staying, if he’s not you move him as well. MTL deal seems okay but I feel like you could get Barron instead, I like Romanov but I’m not sure they target another LHD. If MTL doesn’t end up with the 1st or 2nd pick I feel like jets would likely target their 1st and a lesser prospect as if they’re rebuilding they’ll want top picks now for a guy like Dubois.

Romy is a LHD as well and Norlinder has played the right on occasion (if I remember correctly lol)

Honestly I forgot they had acquired Barron lol, I think he makes more tense for WPG to target than Romanov, but I'd be happy with either.

I always got the sense that Hellebuyck was happy here, but I agree we should move him if he doesn't plan on staying.

Montreal is weaker on RD than the Jets LOL especially if Petry leaves, plus we just traded for Barron so I doubt we move him so soon. Not saying it wouldn't be worth it though lol.

I would pretty easily say no to that deal as a habs fan.

With the habs picking in the top 4 garunteed there is a pretty high chance they are coming out of this draft with a high end centre so the long term need isnt super high.

PLD will be commanding a pretty hefty salary which is a lot to put behind a player who is pretty flawed analytically (he is terrible defensively)

The price is also quite high. Our 2nd is essentially a late 1st value wise as it will be the first 2 picks of the 2nd round. Romanov is easily worth a 1st+ as young established top 4 nhl dman. Dvorak is also worth atleast a 1st as one of the best faceoff centres in the league who is also above a .5 ppg.

Throwing 4+ young 1st round pick assets is too much to give up for 1 player who wouldnt be our 1C who likely ends up on a slightly overpriced contract.

Dubois and scheifele trades are awful for the jets the only way I’d trade Dubois to MTL is if they win the lottery and trade Dubois for the #1 pick and draft Shane Wright. The scheifele trade is worse than the Dubois trade.

"Tank for a year" might end up being several years. Once you embrace losing, the impact will linger.

if we trade Mailloux and get Nemec we win a top 2nd center behind Suzuki ... and still can go for Bedard to have one if not the best c line ever !

For atleast another year or so Mailloux value as a player vs perceived value is probably not great. Trading him now would be selling him short

I think there’s a fine line between rebuilding and tanking. If you can properly execute a rebuild you can convince top players to go through it. Buffalo legit tanked and it lasted. Rangers are an example of doing it right.

I was referring to what the OP wrote in the description. I agree that the Rangers did alot of good things but they also benefitted by being in New York and some players chose/forced their way there (Panarin, Trouba, Fox). I don't see players lining up to play in Winnipeg in that way.

If the habs were smart, they stay away from Dubois. A top 6 forward with 100+ penalty minutes and hes not even ppg. Hes not worth anything to the Habs. He just keeps them mediocre.

While I understand your opinion on Minnesota not needing him. Your comment about injury prone couldn't be further from the truth. He has been one of the most durable players throughout his career. He has only missed 29 games in 14 years and 18 of those were this year from a knee injury and Covid.
