How Much for your Goalie

Created by: Sledgie12

Description
The actual trades put out don't mean anything, just using pieces I feel don't have a defined full, long term role for the Devils that might have some value.

Devils need a goalie in the worst way and these are the ones I think may be available for varying degrees that would improve what they are working with. How much would they be worth?

On the Devils end, I think the only untouchables they have are Hischier, J. Hughes, L. Hughes, Hamilton, and Bratt, with Siegenthaler, Mercer and Holtz real close to that line. I think all draft picks are in play.

Hellebuyck - Seems to be some gripes in Winnipeg and steady decline over the past two years, although still a top 10 goalie at minimum. Long shot but just two years left on a deal and seemed to get some media hate this year.

Lehner - I have no guess to what Vegas will do, but Lehner seems disgruntled.

Caps goalies - Neither played incredible but would be an improvement for the Devils. Maybe the Caps move on from one to try and get the most out of what's left on their window?

DiPietro - Hasn't shown much at NHL level and Vancouver has Demko anyway. Change of scenery kind of situation.

Blomqvist - I think he's one of the better Goalie prospects out there, but with an aging core trying to win another cup before everyone retires, can see them dumping prospects for cheap complimentary players to get as much out of the roster as they can.

Askarov - This may be the biggest long shot due to the draft capitol invested, but they do have Saros as a top 5 goalie already whos relatively young. Do they want to add to this roster and try and get a few runs out of it or start a rebuild?

Knight - Don't know why Florida would trade him, but with the rumors a few months back, if they would send one of their goalies to make this roster even better, especially if they dont win this year.

Nedeljkovic - Brutal year and Detroit looks like they want to build slow. Cossa on the way as well.

Tarasov - Log jam for goalies in Columbus, they gotta move someone. Who knows?

Calgary goalies - Markstroms killing it and they got two younger back ups with value and low end starter potential. Playoff team adding pieces for a back up would help.

Swayman - I'd say the least likely out of all, but kind of all the same points as Pittsburg. Ullmark is just as good and need to make a run while all these pieces are still here. I'f I were a GM, I'd offer sheet for Swayman the second he hits RFA at the end of next year.

Gibson - Anaheims got great goalie prospects and Gibson doesn't seem to fit their timeline. Blow it up and try to suck for Bedard next year. Goal is to be good in two or three years in my view.

For Helle it would take your 2022 1st + Mercer as it would mean we are doing a rebuild, not a retool and may result in us having to move additional players that aren't up for the rebuild.

Helle has said he's good as long as the Jets continue to try to contend so the speculation about moving him should die down... probably better options here. i.e. Lehner and the knights are probably done so he'll need to be moved.

Elliotte Friedman on Hellebuyck’s future (May 2nd, Kenny & Renny Show): “I’ve heard as long as the plan is to contend that Hellebuyck is ok.”

Hellebuyck hasn't gotten media hate locally, team defense in front of him has.

I mean, If I was GM I'd do it. Loosing Mercer would hurt but usually fair trades hurt the heart on both sides a bit. I think their our easier options out there but Helle would be the best choice, always liked him. Maybe Nemec falls a bit and Mercer+Nemec for him. I think thats a pretty good return

Would love Dawes included, he made something in a no-win situation, seemed like he was under an onslaught everytime out.

Columbus has 2 goalies, Merzlinkins and Tarosov, everyone else is just a backup or AHL, but if you’re offering up a 1st, he is all yours and good luck.

I think the best option, considering cost, among those listed would be Samsonov. Maybe Vladar if Calgary thinks Wolf is ready.

Hellebuyck, Gibson will cost an arm and a leg and I would be reluctant to offer an amount that could be the foundation for someone else’s rebuild.

Knight and Askarov probably would apply to this too. But windows match up with ours, so a little better.

DiPietro, Tarasov and Wolf are prospects and unclear if they will provide an upgrade to Daws or Schmid (or faster timeline). Although Wolf’s ceiling is pretty high.

Blomqvist likely stays put as they just dealt Clang.

Detroit doesn’t have the goalie depth to move Nedeljkovic.

Boston isn’t moving Swayman on his ELC.

And Lehner’s injury issues may not be worth it.

So that leaves Samsonov and Vladar.

"How much for your goalie" made me think of the restaurant scene in the Blues Brothers movie. "How much for your women?"

See, I don't really care about helping out another teams rebuild. Especially in the west. I want to know what this team is with an above average goalie, so I'd be comfortable paying close to the world for Hellebuyck, Knight, or Askarov. I agree Boston won't move Swayman but I'd offer sheet him next year if there is no luck on getting a good goalie this year.

I don’t care about their rebuilds either…I care about giving up those amounts.

Goalies are unpredictable. So hard to tell year-to-year who will be good and who will not.

I’d like to see Blackwood healthy with his job on the line, and other options like Daws, Schmid and someone like Samsonov all competing for starts.

Others you could add: Binnington, Varlomov, Grubauer, Murray. Contracts are higher, but trade cost will be less coming off poor seasons. And free agents (Kuemper, Campbell, Husso, etc)

Gibson is signed for five more years, so he would relieve you of having to go through this exercise more than once and he also fits your window better. I think the asking price would be your 2022 first (fifth overall) plus a defenseman ready-to-play like Ty Smith or Reilly Walsh. But don't forget that he has a NTC. (However, that's probably reserved for Canadian teams and some no-hopers like Arizona or Buffalo.)

I don't think Dipietro would cost very much. If McLeod was offered I'd take that.

I think NJD best options are either Binnington or Husso. If St Louis wants to keep Husso then Binnington will probably come pretty cheap. If Husso hits free agency NJD would probably have a good shot at him.

I get you, I do. But the core is already there in NJ. I get the whole Goalies are voodoo thing but this year has proved you do actually have to invest in the position and not just have some stop gap and scrubs. I've lost faith in Blackwood and I think the Devils could be a FORCE in 2023-2024 if they can somehow snag a top 10 goalie.

Grubaurer and Murray I dont think are upgrades, Binnington isn't good enough to justify that term and hit, If they are going to struggle resigning these ELCs eventually, better be for a goalie whos better. Varlomov would be the same as Crawford and Bernier, a stop gap 1B but you still hoping Blackwood can emerge into something he's not.

I am thinking about it as more if a volume play. Last couple of years we went into season naming our starter without him earning it. I want competition for the job.

I feel like NJD (or any of the NY area teams) are rarely on No Trade lists. Teemu Selanne is the only guy I know of that declined a trade to NJD.
