was this possibly the best Jarmo could get

Description
my only plus explanation to this is this since Bjorkstrand still has 4 more years left, all of those who are expiring such as Jiricek, Matey, Silli, KJ, Texier, etc... a lot of people. I guess he's just making room for these other contracts while Bjork enteres his 30s but.
If that cap crunch really is that strict and this is the best he could get and say nothing for Nyquist and Bean... Jesus

I'm thinking cap dumps are just insanely pricey right now. The way Fletcher just said eff it to the rest of his off-season on day one when he tried to move Van Riemsdyk really makes me think the price to dump cap is massive.

As a Ducks fan, the only conclusion I can draw from this is that either (1) Anaheim wasn't offered a bid, or (2) with three seconds and two thirds, Verbeek was happy to pay one of each but Bjorkstrand refused to waive his NTC for Anaheim, or (3) Verbeek is as dumb as Kekalainen. I hope that it's not #3.

As a hawks fan, you'll be just fine. You don't realize how good you're about to have it for the next 5-10 years.

The OP is right about why it was Bjorkstrand traded over Tatar, as if they had traded Tatar instead (who has even less value) the BJs would've had less than $5m coming off the books next summer. And with signing Laine, the BJs were over a barrel in needing to dump a contract and it tanked the value of a very good player.

I'm a fan of Gudbranson (he was great for us last year), but this makes his contract look even worse IMO.

They must really believe in Marchenko's ability to step right into that role. I'm not really surprised Bjorkstrand is the domino to fall, but I expected it to be part of a bigger package, and not for a return that meager. I'm going to just guess that this was the best offer, and maybe even the only one that wasn't just "future considerations."

Yeah the reports on the asks for JVR were insane, teams demanding Philly's 1st in '23 and declining the Panthers 1st in '24 is pretty insane.

That's ridiculous. Van Riemsdyk is owed less money than Nyquist too so I bet the ask was also for CBJ's 1st or more.

And on top of that, Philly's first will almost definitely be top 10 is a good draft

Yep, Jackets would probably be looking at giving up a pick in the top half too. Love Bjorky, but the Jackets have the players to fill in the hole he leaves behind and that 1st could be as good or better than him anyway.

If only you'd have let Gudbranson return to Calgary for less :P

I'm not too upset with that signing. It's a bit high, but he checks a lot of boxes for what they needed. Veteran, RD, Tough, Big. All things that were in very short supply for them. I feel like Gudy should come with quite a bit of fire to reward the faith they had in him to offer that contract too. Nobody likes to hear the kind of things that have been being said about him after the signing.
