He's as good as Chiarot, however you see Chiarot.
I don't think Chiarot is the best comp for Edmundson - for all the slings and arrows you can throw at Chiarot, he was skating top-pair minute (23:34 TOI when he was traded), was on his usual 20-25 points pace, and was an all-situations player, getting time on the PP2 unit and PK1. Basically the kind of player who would be a top 4 on any team in the league, and top pair on a good amount of them, even if you didn't love his metrics or think that Florida overpaid for him.
Edmundson averaged 19:35 TOI in his 24 games, which put him 5th amongst D on last year's Habs. He gets no powerplay time because that's not really part of his game, but will be a top PK guy. He's hit 20 points once in 7 seasons in the NHL, so his offensive game is less than what Chiarot brought to the table. The only advantages I would give him are that he has an extra year of term compared to what Chiarot had, but that's not going to be as valuable if the Canadiens aren't retaining and ship him out at his full 2x$3.5M.
I think if you wanted to move him, you can maybe push for changing Dermott to a prospect like Jack Rathbone, but I don't think you're going to the Chiarot package right now - especially considering he's coming off a season where he missed 58 games with a back injury. It's not quite a red flag, but backs love getting reinjured, so I'd put it at least as a yellow flag on any Edmundson trade I would be making.
