Is Horvat more valuable than Matt Duchene was when traded from Ottawa to Columbus? Duchene was on over a point per game pace including 44 goals (over 82 games). How's Horvat doing?

Easy pass by the avs, they aren’t burning all their assets in. Rental

Probably not more valuable than Duchene was and I don’t know if he gets this return. As for how he’s doing, he’s got 4 goals and 2 assists in 7 games this year so a pretty solid start for him personally despite how bad the team has been

Not allowed to have a conditional pick based on re-signing. Also think it’s an overpay.

Colorado only has $13,225,000 to sign 10 players, And Horvat will cost at least 7 x 7, good luck resigning both Byram and Newhook and other RFAs.

Per the new CBA, Resigning conditions are no longer allowed.

That’s an easy pass. For that package, COL nets a much better player than Horvat.

Difference? Horvat is willing to sign and the Canucks aren’t desperate to trade him

Canucks aren't desperate to trade him? How are those contract negotiations for the soon to be UFA going again?

Miller had another season and couldn't have signed a contract if he wanted to during the season last year. Horvat meanwhile has been able to sign an extension and reporting is that negotiations are 'lukewarm at best'.

Beyond the obviousness that negotiations aren't going well, you have the situation the Canucks are in now. They are already committed to 2 players with significant contracts who will be aging into their mid 30s (OEL and Miller). Adding a 3rd to that isn't a great position to be in as a team who hasn't seen any real success.

i dont think horvat is worth this package, but using a trade from 5 years ago is a poor comparison. different scenario. different market. lot of different aspects

So who's the more recent comparable? There isn't a good one so thats why Duchene is the one we use. The situations, markets, etc, don't really vary very much year to year. Players still get traded for the same ballparks as a decade ago. The last thing that had a significant effect on players values was the introduction of the cap.

1st + 2nd + two of COL top 5 prospects.. yes.. that nets you more than a half year rental on Horvat playing 2C
