Canucks decline. Pearson is LTIR for the foreseeable future, and things sound like he’s trending towards being LTIRetired. No reason to pay to dump him.

Didn't he play like 14 games this season? My bad, I thought he was back. Didn't pay much attention to him.

If he does come back this is a reasonable trade idea for the Canucks to shed salary.

Ideally, Murphy would be great on the right side beside one of Maatta or Evidsson..

The only thing that doesn't work well is him being 30. But at 2m I think it's right on the money.

He has a bargain cost controlled contract for multiple years. And we need a top 4 RD to replace Hronek. 30 doesn't scare me off with good defensemen. Murphy is right in his prime.

Meh. We're not far along enough for me to think it's worth it. Better suited for Buffalo; they're out of their rebuild. Red Wings have at best 1-2 years left.

Yeah, those 14 games were at the start of the season. Then he got injured. Wrist injury that was only supposed to be about a 4 week recovery with surgery. Ended up having 6 or 7 different surgeries and last news I saw he had some kind of medical device on his arm (some kind of stint I think) and is in a cast.

Like the player and the contract retained is a bargain but we don't need it retained so I'm not paying more for it, we have cap for a 2nd pair guy. I'm not paying extra I'll take him at his cap hit and fair value.

LoL I met Gord when he was a bruin at a charity event the wives use to have sometime in the early 90s. Super nice guy if I remember right, it was so so long ago.

Agree that the Hawks should weaponize their cap space, but Kyle Davidson has shown that the price for $3m + cap dumps (Dickinson a d Zaitsev) starts with a 2nd. So Hawks don't make the Armia or Pearson deals. They probably take Murray if the Leafs find a 2nd in another deal. As for the Murphy deal, don't think a 1st and 3rd is enough for Murphy half retained for 3 full seasons. At $2.2m per season, he's a bargain.

Exactly maybe if he was a few years younger but giving up a 1st for a 30yr old dman. Especially when you might not make the playoffs.

Well you don’t know how Backlund is extremely versatile, a perennial Selke candidate, makes every winger he plays with better, so that’s what I would advise you. Also in great shape like 25 year old.

Pearson still had an IV hooked up to his wrist at year end pressor to deal with an infection he got post surgery.

Dhaliwal sports thinks he will still need several surgery’s before he is healed. Right now main goal isn’t being healthy enough to play hockey, but simply to regain use of his hand

Plus why are we paying a higher price for retention we don't need.

I understand the concept of weaponizing cap space, but this is not that. Those trades are examples of letting teams off easy, and letting them dictate what they want to pay to dump a player. If they NEED to dump a player, then the team receiving the cap dump should dictate the price. "Weaponizing" cap space is knowing we have it, other teams want it, and being comfortable not taking any cap dumps if our demands aren't met. Which we should absolutely be able to do without any issues.

Balancing rebuild priorities with getting to the cap floor is absolutely a concern for CHI, but it is a fairly minor one and will be much easier than people make it seem. Also, the NHL doesn't actually have any preordained penalty for not getting to the cap floor. Which is weird that they have a rule that doesn't have a known consequence and they will probably just have to make it up as they go IF a team doesn't meet the minimum cap hit requirements.
