Trading John Gibson

Created by: OldNYIfan
Team: 2023-24 Anaheim Ducks
Initial Creation Date: Jul. 3, 2023
Published: Jul. 3, 2023
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
I'll assume that all the rumors about John Gibson wanting to move on are legitimate.

Okay, I've been "talking the talk" every time (long before this week) that John Gibson's name has come up as a possible trade element, so I thought that it was time for me to "walk the walk" and say what I think is the right value for him if the Ducks indeed have to move him. This way, when it happens, everyone will have the chance to make fun of me. It's the least I can do in the service of intellectual honesty.

The assumption here is that he goes for a 2024 first-round draft pick and an A prospect. Since most of those prospects are RWs (our position of greatest weakness), I put the first (Guenther) in that spot and the others on the putative Taxi Squad so as not to clutter up the entire presentation. I've tried to include every team I thing MIGHT be interested in him.

I'm sure that we'll all have fun seeing how far off I am.

I would lower expectations on the return for Gibson, especially for the sabres. Zero shot Jack Quinn is involved in any goalie trade.

This isn't 2016 anymore. Gibson is consistently one of the worst goalies season after season nowadays. The Ducks aren't getting pieces like Quinn, Guenther in return.

To me it’s either Buffalo or the Devils — most likely the Sabres

I do TT honk he is moved because Gibby’s agent proved me right and you can’t trust Frank with anything to do with Anaheim

Gibson is just not a goalie of interest anymore, too many years of poor & deteriorating performance combined with his contract (cap hit & term) and Hellybuck (maybe Saros) is a better option for an impact goalie.

AZ isn’t touching that, COL has zero interest in Gibson, the others would be interested.

Arizona is happy in net, they love the bargain hunting in net. The right Center or dman is a possibility, but standing Pat in net.

Just between you and me and a couple of my other Avs friends, I was sneaking in the team I'd most like to see him join, for his success.

Gibson going for a 2024 1st and an A prospect? Lol what ?? He’s been trash 4 consecutive years and that contract is an anchor. Gibson at 50% retained gets the conversation started

Which part? The part that Gibson has had 4 consecutive years of decline? Or the part that no team in their right mind would pay a goalie that money based on the track record he’s had of late?

Detroit has 3 goalies under contract, 2 of which we just signed. We pass and without being insulting; I think you're being incredibly optimistic on the return from Detroit.

              This is crazy stuff.
Gibson would not even get claimed off waivers!
              Foolish stuff

To me it’s either Buffalo or the Devils — most likely the Sabres

I do TT honk he is moved because Gibby’s agent proved me right and you can’t trust Frank with anything to do with Anaheim

No it's not. The sabres aren't doing this trade. It's laughable.

Thanks for the input, guys. I'm still a believer that he's worth a first and a prospect, but we'll see. I'm prepared to be as horribly wrong about Gibson's value as I was about LA's interest in Pierre-Luc DuBois.
