I wouldn't mind this trade from the Leafs perspective. Will miss Nylander massively up front, but getting Toews would make our D core a bit rediculous. Although we will still be missing some size and physicality in it.

i think i'd rather keep toews, guy shows up all the time and can be relied on in every situation. Plus we have a good shot at extending toews, nylander is a pure rental. If drouin doesn't work out they can address the top 6 forward with a cheaper option

Makes sense for Colorado kinda seems like they won’t be able to resign Toews anyway so just depends whether they want the forward rental or dman rental essentially

1 injury away from asking JJ or Foote to play 20+ minutes. Avs are better off filling 3RW from the remaining UFA pool or waiting for Kovalenko to arrive in April.

I see both players as rentals who likely have new teams next summer. I think a left side of Byram, Girars, and Johnson is so good that they can afford to let Toews go.

I see Toews getting 7 plus million on the open market. Maybe you guys will shock me but I think he is out of there.

In terms of value, this is about right (contrary to Leafs fans asking for Byram which would be massive overpay) but I think the Avs would prefer to keep their D corps together as-is. It was their strength during their Cup run and Vegas showed that it made a big difference in the absence of an outstanding forward group. I don't think Nylander is a good target for the Avs but, if he were, Toews would be the guy to trade (assuming he doesn't re-sign at a very team-friendly rate).

7 mil would be team friendly and he the Avs could make it work. Avs can move Manson next summer if the extension for Toews gets to expensive

This is true but it’s also the situation just about every team has. Your left side is so good that it’s still arguably the best in the league even without Toews. If you think Landeskog will be back and the player he once was then ya I’d agree this isn’t a deal you’d need. I think that won’t happen though and I also think Nylander on your second line maximizes your scoring potential back to where it was 2 years ago.

Moving Manson means either Girard or Bo is playing the right side. I guess it’s not a major problem though.

Girard and Byram also have the flexibility to play on the right side. Avs identity is the D core. Toews at 4M is vastly more valuable to the Avs style of play than Nylander at 6M is. Avs already went into this season planning for no Landy. Any move to replace him long term won't happen until we see what his progress is next summer.

I already replied to this one on the leafs thread. The Avs for some reason add a 4th and give up the higher value player, which doesn’t make sense.

Both players are awesome but 1-1, I would argue Toews is a better player than Nylander. Combine that with the fact that Toews is way cheaper and this doesn’t make sense.

Now focusing only on the Avs POV, they likely would have more of a challenge re-signing Nylander than they would Toews. Combine that with the idea that it’s easier to sign a top 6 scoring winger than it is to sign a top pair defenseman and I think this is an easy no for Colorado.

Why is Nylander a pure rental but not Toews? Toews has been getting low end Norris love all of the last 3 years. He's getting paid too.

Nylander wants 10M AAV. It doesn't make sense from an Avs perspective with MacK at 12M and Rantanen looking at 12M in 2 years and 14M tied up in Landy and Val.

Toews is probably going to be in the 8's which is slightly more palatable considering the other pending extensions and plays a more valuable position in the Avs playstyle.

I think that's the idea here: both players are likely rentals for the involved teams which makes their value somewhat equal. But Toews is in a different place professionally and personally so he might be amenable to taking a discount in exchange for long-term security.

Being 29 instead of 27 helps drop the price on an 8 year extension. But even if they don't get a discount on a long term deal, Manson can be moved next summer to free up 4.5M which should make an extension for Toews quite easy to fit in the cap.

That's true enough but they'll still have Byram and Mikko to re-sign after next season and Cale a few years after that. And UFA's will be asking for a lot when the cap rises - we're moving past the "$1M for 10 points" days. I worry that a Toews extension will cost them the ability to fill in with quality up front. It makes the development of prospects even more important.

Facts. If Behrens and Malinski don't pan out, we are likely screwed in about 3 years. Hell, we're probably screwed in 3 years anyway, but that's the definition of a window lol.

It doesn't make sense.. a top 10-15 defender who you could extend for a top 40 forward who you absolutely can't extend... makes the team worse in the interim and future

Because Nylander wants 10 million and toews is projected to get 7-8

I'm sure Nylander wants a lot but I haven't actually heard a number. But I can see Toews wanting 9 too.

I can't imagine Toews comes in that low. As you yourself said he's a 10-15 defenseman. I see him wanting 9+

I doubt they give him more than makar.

Probably closer to the orlov deal with more term
