I like this deal for Minnie. I watch a lot of their games and Zucc really stands out. He's like a lizard, the way a lizard takes his tongue and sticks it as far as it does and retrieves what it was trying to do

Good on MIN for this extension. Zuc and Kap are an amazing duo. Zuc is deserving of this extension even though he is 35 and this takes him till he's 38 but I still see him making an impact in the NHL at that age. Best Norwegian NHL player born

Really good deal especially considering how productive Mats is. He's been the perfect compliment to Kaprizov

I don't like the timing of this signing at all.

MIN has cap problems and Zucc just turned 36 y.o....

If I'm the GM, I wait until July 1st to be reassured about his decline and see if you can find better/younger on the market.

Zucc wouldn't be in high demand and would probably be interested to stay in Minnesota anyway.

I like it.

He was unrestricted.

Minnesota signed him to less an AAV then he is currently making, which was expected.

He can play 1st or 2nd line, and at this # going forward you can slot him on the 3rd line if you need/want to.

He has already shown that he has chemistry with this group.

This essentially ensures he most likely retires with the Wild.

He will be 37 when the contract kicks in.

It is difficult to come up with comparable contracts, because there aren't that many forwards who sign at that age. There are quite a few forwards who sign contracts somewhere around age 34-35, but it seems like there is a huge difference in risk between a 34 year old and a 37 year old with how likely it would be that a player might decline between the ages of 34-38.

It is similar to what Pavelski got if you combine his previous two 1 year contracts and average out the AAV.

I think it is more likely that the Wild might regret the second year on this contract, but at the same time there is the human element. Zuccarello is a veteran player who over the last few years has played above his cap hit. If he is important to their room, I can see how they might have been motivated to get it done and avoid the implications of booting out a well-liked core veteran.

I don't think he should have gotten 2 years in this scenario, but I can see why they might have done it. Year-to-year is always better for veterans at that age, where they can fall off a cliff at any moment. If he were a few years younger, 2-3 years would be fine.

He's going to be about 8,000 years old by the time this extension is over, but he's played well enough over the past couple of seasons that I suspect it will still be a good contract. ... That or an injury will put him on LTIR and then who cares.

Steeeeep price for a 36yo but with how few games he missed last year and how well he produced, there's really nothing wrong with it. If his knee explodes or something similar, well, tough ****.

Good contract?

Very good deal. I know Zuc is older but this is a steal. And I know he'll be practically 40 at the end but it's a good deal. I guess the overpay on Foligno balances it out smile

Wild that they signed him so early, pretty much has 3 years on his contract at 36 is interesting.

I’m on the fence on this one. Normally I’d say that extending a commitment to a 36-year-old to 3 years is a bad idea, but he’s coming off the two best seasons of his career, perhaps due to the arrival of Mr. Kaprizov, and unlike Foligno, they got him to take a pay cut. Since he’s already 36, this is less risky than signing a guy who’s still in his early 30s to age 38 because, like Brent Burns in Carolina, they know he’s not aging at the usual rate. If it keeps Kaprizov happy and productive, it’s probably worth it.

Still, I feel like it would have been safer to wait and see how this coming season shapes up for him, especially given Minnesota’s history of having too many old guys signed for too long, a mistake they’re still paying for that probably would have made them a non-playoff team if not for Kaprizov arriving just in time to save them.
