Initial Creation Date: Feb. 5, 2024

Description
With the speculation that Nelson could become available.
With Byram, the obvious answer is trading him for a longterm 2C but, Cal Ritchie is starting to tear up the OHL and the org is very high on him. Nelson gives you a 2 year buffer for Ritchie to make the NHL as a 2C in 25/26

Lankinen is extended over the summer and run a tandem of Georgiev/Lankinen next season

Nelson is only available if:

1. The isles are WAAAAY out of the playoff race by the deadline
2. An offer is made that they absolutely can't refuse

Byram is fine but he's not quite the absurd overpayment that's needed to move Nelson

I appreciate your pov. I have the opposite, Nelson without max retention isn't the kind of payment I would be fine with moving Byram for. Even with that retention, idkm

Hawks probably decline. Moving Ryjo in season this year takes the Av's '26 2nd at least. Only reason Hawks have for taking Ryjo this year is to gain another high pick. What's likely a late 3rd isn't enough.

I can't wait until RyJo is traded elsewhere like Kuzmenko so Avs fans can stop with this RyJo to Chicago nonsense.

Yea and the Isles I think should be looking for a high end prospect if their gonna trade him rather than B prospects and a 1st. I’d like Byram a lot for this team

It would insane for the isles to turn this down.

Wow! Trading a 33 yr old Nelson for a 22yr old Byram 1for 1 is pretty gutsy.
I don’t think a 3rd is enough to get the Hawks to take on “Ryjo” ( man I hate using that nickname) but I do think it is in the ballpark enough to get everyone to the table to get the negotiating started.

Honestly, I think he doesn't get traded at all.

You're going to insist on hanging onto an aging guy that will hit UFA after next season when you're being offered a 22 y/o D with top-pair talent? If that isn't an "absurd overpay," I'm not sure what is. That is a deal most GM's would take in a heartbeat and one CMac would never offer anyhow.

Well Cmac should be interested. You get a 2 years of a 2C in nelson which gives enough time for ritchie to fully develop. It seems like byram is going to be moved this summer, so why wait until then? theres more than enough good D available with picks and prospects where there isnt another 2C available.

Our top 4 D is set for the next 5+ years. Like I said he's fine and is gonna be very good as he develops but he's not what we need, if we're gonna trade a guy who's hit 35 goals the past 2 years and will likely hit it again this year we're gonna need a crazy overpayment and Byram isn't that. Maybe for another team, but not for the Isles.

Isles pass. Lindhom got a bigger return. Nelson is a better player, scorer then him and has an extra year.
For Isles to move Nelson - we'd want the following

1st
2nd
Top prospect
Good young player

I think Byram is a great talent but I personally have concerns with the injury history - tonight's game set his career high in GP at 43 (in his 4th NHL season). The talent is there, and I know sometimes injuries are just dumb luck, but if it's not a red flag it's at least an orange one for me.

I also agree with the idea that if the Isles have a choice of packages, I'd focus on getting back more forward talent in a Nelson trade than defensemen. Dobson's only a year older than Byram and already one of the top RHD in the league; Romanov is the same age and has solidified himself as a top-4 guy. Pelech is signed for 5 more years, and Pulock 6; Mayfield is signed for enough years that you're still probably 2-3 years away from being a buyout candidate. Byram would arguably be the 2nd or 3rd best out of that group, sure; but there's enough depth there that I think you can maybe eschew best player available and go for need.

Or, to put it another way: your top 6 without Brock Nelson is Barzal, Horvat, and a list of guys that make me wish for another lockout if only for the possibility of penalty-free compliance buyouts becoming a thing again.
