So this site says they have just under 8 million in cap space for next year. With that 8 million they have to resign Marner (11) Kapanen (3.5) Johanssen (2.5) and Sparks (2) for a total of 19 million how is that possible? They are screwed or can someone at least explain to me how they plan on doing this?

[aquote=DogDayBoiiiiiis;723955]He is the best player on his team, just cause you say so doesn't mean he is you imbecile.[/quote]

He’s the best based off what? Your opinion. Marner and Tavares have been much better. You could argue Reilly and Anderson are better this season he would be top 5 in his team. But # is jt or marner

Wonder what Laine will get after seeing Matthews contract.

Prob high 8's or low 9's....

Remember, the Tavares signing set the bar for TML contracts....Scheifele's and Wheelers set it for the Jets

One of their players goes on the LTIR and relieves 5M+

Ok so even if that is true that puts them at 13 million in cap space which is 6 million short. A guy like Nylander (Dubas said he wouldn't trade), Kadri, or Marleau (NTC) has to go right?? I just don't see any other option

We are seeing with Colorado how no matter how great one of your lines are if you don't have depth you lose. No i'll admit the core of players that will be eating the majority of the Leafs salary are all great players but if they are filling the rest of those spots with borderline NHLers their depth is going to be a huge weakness and get exposed big time against better teams. Not to mention injuries they are basicaly banking on no one getting hurt and we've seen with Matthews already he is prone to injuries. I'm genuinely curious to see how it all plays out

I would say Tavares is...or Marner...but if you value C over a winger, I would say Tavares

I am not a TML fan but this is my humble opinion in seeing those players play a few times that Ive watched...

Doesn’t take a rocket scientist to know this. You could argue Reilly is even playing better. Either way he’s far from a top 5 player or worth 11.5+ money.

There's nothing more exclusive than Stanley Cup success. It's why JT came home.

By the time Matthews is UFA, the Coyotes will probably be playing in Houston anyways

They were supposed to be in Winnipeg like 10 years ago. Many people expected them to move to Winnipeg in 2011, and people always say they're moving but they still haven't. They might move but I don't think so.

Start with the Salary cap and start hitting minus: Tavares: 15.9, Matthews: 15.9, Nylander: 9.0 Horton/Kessel: 5.7, Rielly: 5.0 Anderson: 5.0, currently that equals 56.5 - Salary cap of 83.0 = 26.5 mil left. Okay, Kadri = 4.5; Hyman = 2.5; Brown = 2.1 and that all equals 9.1 - 26.5 = 17.4 mil left, Gauthier = 700K; Kapanen remains unsigned, Johnsson remains unsigned, Zaitsev = 4.5; Muzzin = 4.0, okay so that leaves = 17.4 subtract 4.5, 4.0, .7 = 8.2 mil to sign the balance of the Restricted free agents, Unrestricted, and minor league players, right? oh and before i forget, Toronto still needs a backup goaltender.

A

I realize the term isnt ideal as he will be a UFA so not a great contract but I think Dubas worked with what he was given and if im a leafs fan im content with this contract, not happy but not upset. This makes the trade deadline and outlook on the offseason alot easier (Leafs will have 7 mil in cap space according to capfriendly). Interested to see how he does.

and if Marner 9M they are at 80.9M with 16 players under contract because Horton has to be on the opening training camp roster who gets traded Marleau Kadri Nylander Muzzin Zaitsev or Rielly

Now here's the think, you might want to sign Marner to 15.9 for next year too. ... LOL... that way, you've properly cleared budget for those 2 years, and while you're at it, you might want to resign all of your RFAs Kapanen, Johanssan to 6 to 7 mil each for next year as well.... And re-sign all your d-men too.

Well, at least they have Frederik Andersen, Morgan Rielly and Nazem Kadri for a lot of years. And Nylander is tradable, his cap hit goes down next year. Marleau can go back to San Jose, i'm sure he would love to. But they have to trade someone. Plus, eight year contracts can become disasters, especially with older players. Matthews didn't sign that kind of contract. He wants to have leverage early on in his carrer, which is great for not only the Leafs, but if he ever decides to sign with another team, it would also be great. Exibit A: John Tavares. Tavares signing in Toronto was great for the Maples Leafs because they now have two number one centers, but it was also great for the New York Islanders, because they found their identity after Tavares left. If Matthews leaves, it would not be that bad for the Maple Leafs because they would have space to work with. Tavares will set a standard in the NHL.
As for Marner, they have a ton of options.

There's one thing this deal does TODAY: Cap Certainty. However, I'm very concerned about Marner. He's undoubtedly been more valuable than Matthews this season. I realize he's not a Center, but he's gotta be over $10M AAV on a similar term contract.

Yea, but for this AAV, you would think that Toronto would be able to buy some UFA years. I guess Matthews wants out of Toronto ASAP smile

Or maybe he did what stamkos did and signed for 5 to get his 8 year then to make sure he overall makes more money. I personally think the AAV is fine for his skill i just wish it was longer but we will have the cap to resign him.

That term is dumb.

Matthews probably did this short term so he can get 16M or something stupid like that on his next contract.

Greedy overrated punk

If Marner doesn't get what he wants before July 1st I can bet you a offer sheet is coming his way.

If an offer sheet comes in for Marner, Dubas should take the 4x 1st round picks and run. Solves all the Leafs cap problems and gives them an extra A or B prospect in each of the next four years? Yes please.
