Getting two second rounders for Gustaffson would be pretty great. But sounds about right.

I'd argue he's worth a late first, if he agrees to an extension, of course

He came out of nowhere and had an amazing season which makes him a very risky trade target. even more so since he only has 1 year left on his contract. Personally I wouldnt give up very much until he proves that he can repeat last seasons success, but then he would just be a UFA target not a trade target

As a Hawks fan. (admitting possible subconscious bias) I agree with most of these comments. Assuming Bowman can't get him to extend reasonably...which is the 1st priority before a trade...then ATLEAST TO ME, he's NOT an off season trade. He's a TDL trade. @moli92 @ForsbergForVezina @Poehling you guys are all 100% correct. For the acquiring team...an extension is a HUGE requirement right now. Go look at the comments from his last extension for 2 years $1.2M! Most people said it was a bad signing. I'm admitting the risk because his value is literally based off 1 year. Although, it's a risk that with more NHL ice time...can probably be mitigated. He's continuing to play well @ worlds. I personally expect him to continue good play into next season. So then the TDL comes, AND maybe an extension isn't in place, AND players are given a higher priority over draft picks. AT THE DRAFT...draft picks are the premium. I don't think an Muzzin type return (A 1 year Muzzin type return...Muzzin will have 2 playoffs in Toronto for that trade) is unreasonable. With $1.2M...literally every team going to the playoffs can be a trade partner. My prediction is MTL is the trade partner for him at next year's TDL because a puck moving LD...and that's their #1 need. He' can play next to Weber and be one of the best top pairs in the NHL...it also allows Mete and Petry be a tremendous 2nd pair. The 2020 1st and a high prospect...with a conditional 2021 pick going back to MTL if he doesn't extend...will be the return IMO. The CHI pick is 2021 because of timing of the draft vs the follow start of the season.)

If the hawks draft Byram, I think Gustafsson will make the most sense to move. Nashville and Montreal both make a lot of sense because of their poor PP ranking. I rather not extend Gus as CHI, just another D man making more than the hawks could afford with a loaded prospect system. That money could be put to much better use filling other holes.

1 year wonders rarely command huge returns. Chicago would need to move him at the TDL next year and if Gus kept his pace into game 60'ish around the TDL, then you may see some teams willing to throw some value for him. Its just too risky after only one year of big numbers.

To me, this is the more interesting conversation among people who really know the Hawks system. It depends on what you can get more value for. We'll stick with MTL as a trade partner...just because we agree they're a possible destination. Who does MTL value more right now? Beaudin or Gus? It's all about return. From a Hawks point of view...keeping Gus (at a reasonable cap) is like bird in hand vs two possible prospects in the bush. Ya Know??? He'll continue to develop. He's proven he can get ~55 points in ~65 games under Colliton. People forget that Gus didn't start out the season on this pace. Q hardly played him at all in "real" situations. Gus didn't play on the PP...he wasn't on the top line.

***EDIT*** I still think Q is the best coach in the NHL, but everyone has flaws. It's no secret that Q has a hard time letting young players develop because he hates failures. If a young dman makes a mistake...he's likely to be riding pine next game.

This is a good debate, we all know MTL was high on Beaudin at the draft. I think Montreal only missing the playoffs by a couple points would suggest they rather acquire Gustafsson. It would cost more, but Bergevin is an aggressive GM and MTL wants to compete with Price in his prime.

@F50marco what do you think from a MTL perspective. (Not saying MB is a lock to trade for either of these player or that MTL is their only possible destination) Where do you value each of these scenarios? A.) Beaudin today or B.) Gus in half a season (assuming continued good performance)

Keep in mind, Beaudin has not played any pro hockey yet. I could see a team trading for Gustafsson at the draft. I think the league has seen enough of his PP work and puck possession dominance.

The value of each player? Beaudin is a late first so he'll be treated as such. Depends if anyone really likes what he brings. Its kind of early to tell. I was a little surprised he went in the 1st round to be honest but the diff between late 1st and 2nd isn't all that much. Gus is definitely on MTL's radar but ignore the Habs fans who think Drouin somehow goes the other way or a 1st. Not MB's type of move to make with the way the team has been going and what he's been preaching. I think the best scenario in which Chi gets good value and Habs don't break the bank is a like two 2nds or a 2nd and a prospect.

I also don't think we'll see a draft trade for him from the Habs. They'll be in on some UFA dmen and are most likely drafting a LHD in the 1st round at 15th so with Mete now and Romanov in the near future, Habs will not have space for that need anymore.

I only want the Habs so go in on Gus as a rental.

Beaudin was a late 1st and now he's closer to the NHL and had a great season...he's worth a bit more now.

The Blackhawks received multiple 1st round offers from playoffs for Gus last TDL, he's worth that. Gus is less of a risk then a late 1st round pick that has never played in the NHL.

Well Gus's trade value isn't my opinion, that's the market response was at the TDL...you might not have known.

Beaudin's trade value doesn't stay the same after a good first year in the juniors and one year closer to the NHL; opinion or logic? Logically, why would his trade value still be worth a #27th OA pick?
