So if Marner says no to that, as GM you are okay with Marner sitting this coming season?
A few of the smart guys around these parts have admitted to this coming season being a punt year.

Actually, playing hardball with Marner wouldn't be such a bad idea come to think of it.

Think the Leafs have to defend against an offer sheet, so they get the four picks. So it's 10.6m on a five year deal. If Marner wants more term...still might be 10.6, I don't mind the 8m X 2 years.
If Marner isn't signed by October 1, the cap will go up for year one (remember Nylander was at 10.6 this year). As Trickster suggested, "let him sit" might be best option at some point. And really it isn't the Leafs are forcing him "to sit" Marner has the option to sign with hundreds maybe thousands of pro teams in dozens of leagues wide wide. Leafs are not restraining him at all.

Trade him then or tell him to go find a team that will pay him more than 10.5 and sign an offersheet with them. What it comes down to is does Marner want to, and value, being a leaf. Because if he does he'll just sign already. If I'm Dubas I say this

"Look Mitch here's two offers, 2 years at 8.0 million. Or 7 years at 10.0 million. Either sign one of these two offers by July 15th, or you will force me to trade you."

Offer him the best you can and make him decide already. do you want to be a Leaf or not?

. . . with the proviso that if someone offer-sheets him, Toronto matches up to four-firsts territory, as @palhal says.

Gee, dzad96, being Mitch's dad and all, I thought you would have bigger influence on himConfused From a negotiating point of view, you shouldn't use "force to trade you" line. Mitch knows the CBA. Heck even a signed Marner can be traded for four more years. Make that threat and come July 15, now it looks like you have to trade him to keep face....and if you can't?
And I'll disagree with giving Marner just two options on term. Well there is one year...a qualifying offer. Then the Leafs might would want 7 or 8 years. Rumour is a two years. So that's a minimum of five terms the Leafs should offer. Leafs still might like a three year term or five year term that Marner offers.
But I agree with you. Very soon you make your final offers. Mitch has to pick one....and give a date for his decision. Let's say August 1st, and tell him then term options and money goes down. . Not in training camp...down. Opening season.....down. etc.

Life time supply of free juice boxes, free comprehensive full coverage insurance, free whatever other stuff he is the ad man for, and the Kucherov deal.

I think I'd sooner set a deadline this summer and if he doesn't like the offer then trade him and keep moving forward.

Something tells me if he sat for the year the relationship would be ruined and they'd need to part ways anyways. Better to be proactive about it.

Have you seen @Jangle29 's ACGM where he made a fantastic trade involving Marner? Good deal for both teams imo.

That is not a dumpster fire omg ?
That is a fantastic trade for both teams geeze...what more can one want.
I mean short of fleecing a brain dead GM, that's as close to as you can get to a "hockey trade".

The way I see this is Kadri and Terravainen basically cancel eachother out. So its Marner for Pesce and Necas. That's horrendous.

Taravainen only had 6 less pts than Marner last year for half the price locked up. Give your head a shake

It's still workable trade, hell add a pick from Carolina to Toronto

You know what? Maybe Carolina needs to add to the deal but really you are making it sound like it's a non-starter.
It's workable deal at least which is far more than 95% of what you see on capfriendly.

I think it's rather telling that Ferris has gone silent after being able to talk to other teams. I don't think the offers are as lucrative as he anticipated. My guess I think Marner is fighting hard for a 5 or 6 year deal at atleast 10 million. If the rumours are true about him turning down a 8 year 80 million dollar deal are true, (I highly doubt they are, considering Brian Burke started it) then I think he's going to try to get 10 mill on a shorter term which the Leafs don't want to do. I don't think it's a game of chicken either at this point.

There is a very good possibility that Ferris asked a few teams with space and a good outlook (Colorado, NYI, maybe Phoenix) and asked what they want to do and the offers are not better than TO's which really puts Dubas in the driver seat and I think Marner won't want to drag it out too long. He's going to be smart and realize he isn't going to get a better deal. I just can't see him wanting anything to do with what Nylander went through last year. (On a side note, Dubas won that negotiation big time. Nylander is going to score 80 points this year and make less than 7.)
