Surprised MacKinnon is so low, also can we take this as a piece of evidence that Bergeron is definitely declining?

Makes sense that Matthews tops the list based on what i am hearing other players and coaches in league publicly saying to the media.

McDavid was 52nd in the league, maybe his terrible defense had something to do with it?

Wins above Replacement. How many wins did you help your team get compared to a 13th forward or 7th defenseman (a replacement level player)

Essentially your overall impact this season, this accumulates over time.

Heres an article that goes way more in depth about it, you may wanna just skim thru it

or maybe it's another **** stat that has no real value. Because it's pretty clear that Players like McDavid and Drai had much larger value than any replacement on the oilers. Hell if both of those guys aren't playing they are a last place team and it's not even close.

WAR has its merits, but it's an extremely "loose" stat, because it doesn't focus on a specific individual statistic. and something I've found annoying is that I've never seen how they weigh different individual statistic over others (like obviously Goals are most likely weighted above anything else, but what are the ratios? How much weight do they give to takeaways/giveaways? Faceoff%? etc. If someone knows I'd love to find out!)

imo it shows how much a team is dependent around that player. It's not a perfect system, obviously EDM is built around McJesus, and surely CBJ isn't built around Bjorkstrand. But looking at those anomalies shows a glimpse of how WAR works. imo it highlighted that EDM still succeeded when Mcjesus was not playing this past season, and that CBJ is a goal scoring challenged team (4 worst in GoalsFor in the NHL) and Bjorkstrand lead the team in multiple goal scoring stats (Goals, Shooting%, GameWinning Goals, etc.)

This ranking is not a ringing endorsement for WAR as a hockey stat, to say the least.

I thought
Panarin was the #1 player in the league this year though no? last time I checked he had 4.4 WAR, the next closest skater was Marchand I think.

Is Killorn's high WAR a one-off based on his unsustainable career year (where he has a 20% shooting %), or is he regularly high in this metric?

Also, can you recommend the site to use to see WAR?

Maybe this stupid stat had something to do with it.

It’s a beautiful subjective game, i hate that people just keep trying reduce it to a number.

I mean, i think he’s the best at scoring goals even strength. That’s kinda more important than freaking war.

It doesn't take into account TK/GV and FO% bc there is generally a very low repeatability in those stats iirc, and there is almost 0 correlation between those stats and actually winning hockey games

It compares players to an acreage replacement level player league wide, so the team they're on doesn't really affect it, McD just gets tanked bc his brutal defense (and imo not enough weight given to his contributions on the PP) and Bjorkstrand is one of the better defensive forwards in the game

he's generally been good analytically (constantly had a high p/60 as well, just buried on Tampa) but probably did have a career year this year (tho plays for Tampa, they have a more generous tracker, and are a stupid good team, which the model equates for, but it is tough to equate for having so many good players)

I'm assuming it was EW's WAR model, which is unfortunately paywalled

Thanks for your thoughtful response, much appreciated.

I quite like Killorn as a buy-low top 6 forward option for Colorado. He'd give us a solid two-way guy on the 2nd line who brings much of what Nichuskin brings defensively, while also offering some more offense.
