Goligoski is better than Stralman and has one less year. As for Skinner, no team is gonna retain 2.5m over 7 years

You just made Schmaltz worth 8.35M over 6 years for Buffalo.. so Buffalo gets the worse player and pays more.. Somehow I doubt they’d say yes to that.

Put it this way though

To escape the awful Skinner deal BUF would have to:

Keep just over 1/4 of the deal on their cap all told
Receive a slightly better much younger guy at 6M$

The only alternatives to escaping that deal are much uglier like taking on Martin Jones etc. and the buyout is 2.3M$ on their cap until 2034 lol I mean gosh idk

It has to be evaluated from the position they're confined to currently unfortunately -unless anyone has a time machine on hand- and that position sucks

I mean they get the better player. I'm taking 45 points in 70 games from a center over 23 points in 59 games from a winger

Actually kinda fantastic for Buffalo especially due to Nick having no clauses they could flip him asap for a perceived short term negative value deal like (emphasis on perceived) Nino Niederreiter and in that scenario they'd go from:

Jff Skinner 9 9 9 9 9 9 9

Nino + ret 7 7 2.5 2.5 2.5 2.5 2.5

At worst Nino is about as good as Jeff (fitting given their draft positions) and I'd much rather have 2.5M$ of useless money than Jeff Skinner in his 30s

To the AGM creator 🤓

It really depends on if they plan on skinner playing 3/4 line minutes. How quickly people forget he had 40 goals a year ago. Is he overpaid? Yep. Do you make that worse by retaining that much (never gonna happen) and taking a bloated contract back. So if we’re gonna use 1 year sample size (because that’s how statistics work right) I’d rather have Skinners 40 for 9M in 82 then Schmaltz 7 for 5.8 in 40.

Confused as to why they need to deal him? Will he return to a 30 goal scoring forward that draws penalties? Probably. This isn’t a Sabres fan, and most Sabres fans know there’s one guy on the team that’s got boat anchor that needs to go and that’s okposo

Personally I'd much, much rather have Skinner at 9M than Schmaltz at $8.35M. No deal for me.

This asinine thread has been brought to you by jason freaking botterill. I didnt love the skinner contract when he signed it, but then doubling down on stupid by not giving him a center to play with (marcus johansson was hopelessly out of his depth as a 2nd line center) and adding a steaming pile of sheary/rodrigues/vesey as the other winger, i mean seriously. Skinner scored 40 two years ago with eichel and reinhart, with a career high shooting percentage. Last year, with brutal linemates he had his career low shooting percentage. Hes probably gonna play with staal and one of reinhart/olofsson/cozens. Hes probably never gonna live up to his contract, but if hes chipping in 30/20/50 on the second line with decent 5v5 numbers, all of these threads will go away.

Yes $9,000,000 was too much.
Would you and others be complaining if he played with jack and Sam and got another 40?
Botterill did not put Skinner on Johansson's line.
sheary/rodrigues/vesey/Skinner/Miller/Montour/Okposo/Hutton all had career worse seasons but somehow that is Botterill's fault.
Yes it was Botterill's fault for thinking the team needed a motivator so you are correct all of those bad seasons are on Jason.
