Leafs Goaltending Options

Created by: jmac490
Team: 2020-21 Toronto Maple Leafs
Initial Creation Date: Mar. 29, 2021
Published: Mar. 29, 2021
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
The main reason to make a goalie trade is to stabilize the roster moving forward.

Reimer: I think a tandem of Reimer/Campbell would be one of the most positive G cores in the league and I feel like the Leafs play better when they are getting positive reinforcement from their Goalies

Lankinen: Could be a cheap interesting option moving forward as Lankinen has been playing exceptionally for the Hawks and could be the Hawks, "Binnington" for the season. He could flip next year, but for 800K he may be worth the risk

Hart: I really like Hart and he needs his MoJo back. This would be a reclamation project of sorts and the Leafs are a perfect team for projects like these. Simmonds and Galch are two prime examples of reclamation projects that are helping the Leafs succeed this season
Trades
1.
CAR
Ship Freddie to a 3rd party

Receive a pick for Freddie that could be flipped for Reimer.
    Potentially a 2nd Rd pick
    2.
    CHI
      Freddie + Higher Pick.
      Maybe a 2nd
or a Prospect + Pick + Freddie combo
      SDA + 3rd?
      3.
      TOR
      1. Cates, Noah [Reserve List]
      2. Hart, Carter
      Additional Details:
Cates is a personal favourite and doesn't need to be added. Would be nice to get a lesser W prospect if Amirov is moved

That doesn’t really make any sense for the Hawks and frankly I don’t think the value is there.

Why would we trade our younger, better, less expensive goalie of the future to you for Anderson and a 2nd? You guys can have Subban for Freddy and a 2nd.

Lankinen is 2nd in the entire NHL in GSAA only behind Vasilevskiy. He's also under contract next year for $800k so it's not like he's even a pending UFA.

It's not being sensitive...pretty sure you wouldn't trade a franchise goalie for scraps either.

        Why would Lankinen be ‘cheap’?

The OP says he could be a cheap option, then immediately compares him to binnington. Perhaps he means cheap in money? Another interesting and cheap goalie from the hawks is Subban!

Definitely meant cheap as a cap hit.
Binnington to me, was good for the cup run then proceeded to tank and lose his confidence this season.
You could say that Freddie is worth a 2nd. Then it would be 2x 2nd for Lankinen, who's a relatively unproven guy.
Probably wouldn't do a deal for Subban, since he's been moved around a ton for scraps. Maybe if we wanted Hutch back in the AHL, we could do like a 4th/5th but at that point it isn't really worth to the Hawks

Maybe I'd do Elliott and Patrick for Matthews. Not a big fan of Matthews and having an extra capable puck stopper is always nice.

Wouldn't call Freddie (~2nd pick value), a 1st (could be 2022 if you wanted a stronger draft year), and Amirov (A-/B+ wing prospect that could replace Voracek in a few years), "scraps".

Like I understand Hart can be a very capable goalie. But he's struggling, and the system around him seems to be failing as well. Could be nice for him to get a change of scenery

Gonna have to agree with that. Typical fan mentality. These are the goalies I want and I don’t care if they’re for sake.

Ullmark and one of the goalies from Arizona, bernier and maybe khudobin would be better targets.

Hart is still a franchise goalie. Not many goalies play in the NHL at his age. Just because the team is playing like absolute trash in front of him does not mean we are going to just sell him off.

Andersen is a UFA, no use for the Flyers. Amirov is a prospect and nothing more right now. And that 1st is likely to be a later round 1st so the value isn't high.

I would trade Subban for a 4th... as for your talk about binnington and lank, it's conjecture at best. Freddy isn't worth a 2nd because of his play this season, his contract status, and the fact that no contender will pay a 2nd for him at the deadline. Lank has proven himself a starter im my book, and until his play says otherwise he's the guy in Chicago.

Ullmark is injured, as are Raannta and Kuemper, I like Bernier. I would get Bernier. And I'm not sure about Dobby

        That's fair.
Just for arguments sake, if we are purely looking at this season alone, what would you say the cost of Khudobin would be? Or Bernier? Or Reimer?

Until we know the full extent of Freddies injury I just dont think were gonna see a goalie trade and if there was one its probs gonna be for 1 of the Carolina goalies as they did say they would move one for a RD.

So unless Freddie goes on LTIR and is expected to be injured till the playoffs I just dont see a big goaltending move happening.

At best we could hear Toronto traded a 6th round pick or something and bring in Forsberg from Ottawa but thats only if Hutchinson continues to struggle, heck the guy we got from Columbus (despite having the one bad game) could get a look

I have been conditioned to expect lesser returns for goalies, if Lehner at half x half retained got a prospect, 2nd, roster player goalie back then I would guess that's the upper limit of value for those guys.

Unfortunately we really don't have a RHD to move to Carolina for on of their G. Unless they wanted Dermott for Reimer? That way we could play Sandin (or god forbid Marincin), after Sandin's injury is healed up

Ullmark is injured, as are Raannta and Kuemper, I like Bernier. I would get Bernier. And I'm not sure about Dobby

Did he get hurt last game? He was back in net for the Boston game. Raanta I didn’t realize was hurt again. Unless they fall further they won’t be moving a goalie.

In any case leafs will go with Andersen if he will be back this season. If his season is over they may move him or throw him on ltir. Deadline cap implications will dictate.

I have been conditioned to expect lesser returns for goalies, if Lehner at half x half retained got a prospect, 2nd, roster player goalie back then I would guess that's the upper limit of value for those guys.

If Bernier at 25% gets a 2nd + Prospect + Roster Goalie I would be shocked. Good on Stevie Y though if he could pull that off

I thought he was out. Last I checked (couple days ago) all 3 of the goalies were injured. Could be wrong with Ullmark though.

I agree they won't pull of Lehner value, but Vegas shocked everyone last season.

In my book, Dermott is not for trade this season unless a replacement comes back the other way. because the you’d put Sandin in the lineup. Now you’re 1 or 2 injuries away from Marincin.... it’s not good depth.
And teams tend to lose, on average, one player to injury per round I believe.

Dermott can go to Seattle in the off-season for all I care, he’s out best bet at Seattle not taking anyone too important
