Bill Daly on long contracts and CBA circumvention in 2010:
It’s ok
Everything is fine
It’s good
We have looked into it
Checked out
Looks good
All ok
Looked again, still good
Stop. Devils, Kovalchuk “crossed a line in sand”
—> Given heaviest penalty in NHL history.
Afterwards, he agreed to lift similar actions for Detroit, Tampa, Philly, Chicago, and Vancouver (only if NHLPA agreed to 40+ rule).
To this day, Devils still paying penalties.
None of the other teams ever lost a pick, got cap charge, paid fines. Nothing.
Lesson of the story....if teams keep pushing the lines on LTIR, thinking it’s all CBA compliment, eventually one of them is going to be made an expanse of and get hit hard to force NHLPA into making a change.
League-wide cap goes up by 1/32 next year. Teams should be ok. Am guessing the year after, once expansion is done, new TV arrangements are in, one team won’t be picking in Bedard draft.
