Quoting: Rangsey
What would you do with 11mil in cap space approaching the deadline in a weaker division?
That core isn't getting any younger.
#Kucherovrule.
San Jose is in a odd situation.
They just lost their WC spot. Theyre tied for it still but they have more GP played then those ahead, and more then EDM who is chasing everyone right now as they free fall.
Looking into the roster:
Meier - Hertl - Barabanov = legit top line but Hertl is a pending UFA with no word on the direction rn, Bara is also a pending UFA
Dahlen - Couture - Gregor = "ok 2nd line" but is either really hot or really cold
Cogs - Bonino - Nieto = zero offence
Raska/ Viel - Weatherby - Pedersen = just a bunch of rookies tryna fight or find their ground in the NHL
INJ =
Labanc - coachs doghouse, NEEDS TO BE TRADED for some value
Balcers = good player, could see him this week coming back
Gadjovich= just a fighter
Ferraro - Burns = ELITE, lol jk but theyre rock solid
Megna - Merkley = Merkley is now our #2/3 and hes a rookie, but hes been VERY good quietly, so has AHL lifer Megna
Simek/ Vlasic - Meloche = Just a waste of ice time here (trade Simek for a 3rd or 4th please)
INJ =
Karlsson = was having a dominant year, out long term
Middleton = was having a dominant year, concussion issues
Knyzhov = was having a dominant year last year as a rookie, long term injury and recovering from surgery still, no timeline
Reimer - Hill = either really really really good, or just okay and our offence isnt good enough to support "just okay" (and both have dealt with health issues)
So you have a team that COULD make the playoffs, has struggled all year to be healthy (and were COVID test dummys while other teams complained, SJS wasnt given a break); but theyre just depleted.
The way the team has played despite the odds, deserve a playoff spot, but deserving doesnt mean ****.
All of our offence comes from:
1. Meier (looks like a long term Shark)
2. Hertl (pending UFA deciding future)
3. Barabanov (pending UFA deciding future)
4. Couture (hot or cold)
5. Dahlen (inconsistent but hes a rookie)
6. Gregor, dont think he COULD BUY a goal, terrible terrible luck. honestly its sad how little luck hes had with how good hes been.
So if youre SJS; its not worth going all in, its not worth selling. Youre filled with cap space and premium assets (looking like a top prospect pool in the whole league) yet as you said, an aging core who wants to win now (Burns, Karlsson having dynamite years with Reimer). You cant really add upgrades until Hertl and Barabanov get decided. And our record has only shown Hertl he can help make us a winning team BUT he deserves a shot at the cup if he wants it.
Really SJS needs a top 6 RW for Dahlen - Couture, primarily a SCORER, and PP specialist would be ideal. They then need help on the third pair but they have literally 3 injured TOP4 defenders so it would have to be a rental. But - if Hertl walks, SJS should pack it up this year and:
Trade Hertl for the BIGGEST HAUL you can receive (50% ret.), Trade Barabanov for a sneaky high return (at 50% ret. , I could honestly see Barabanov at 500k getting close to if not more than a first), and float Reimer for a overpay, move Simek for a 4th, trade Labanc for a 2nd + prospect (thats optimistic), and pray to god Arizona will take on the Vlasic contract (or that he retires).
AND the funniest thing if SJS was healthy and called up some rookies they would not need any help and would be a playoff team imo..
Eklund - Hertl - Meier
Dahlen - Couture - Barabanov
Gregor - Bonino - Balcers
Raska - Pedersen - Coe
Nieto/ Weatherby/ Cogs
Ferraro - Burns
Middleton - Karlsson
Knyzhov - Merkley
Megna
Reimer Hill
Shoot Vlasic to the sun, trade Simek/ Labanc and you have a better team and a team with tons of cap space.
