The Weber Experiment

Created by: MNBassman
Team: 2022-23 Minnesota Wild
Initial Creation Date: Mar. 8, 2022
Published: Mar. 8, 2022
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Just checking this out…

As I look at this roster, it seem obvious that the right thing for the Wild to do is still to trade Zuccarello. As is, this team is tiny and would easily get pushed around in the playoffs! I would much prefer Greenway over Zucc in this scenario.

I think the price for Weber will be quite heavy. If we look at Seabrook trade that was made for the same reason, the lightning gave up a 2nd and Tyler Johnson. I believe Montreal will get more since the Seabrook contract was 5M and the Weber contract is almost 3M more. Just my thoughts tho.

With all due respect, greenway being signed to extension means he's not getting traded. This doesn't happen because of the ramifications such as distrust between players, and teams, agents that will avoid wild etc... in terms of shea, he will still count against cap

I don’t think Tyler Johnson was considered an asset in that trade. That trade was as much about dumping that contract as it was about getting seabrook’s contract to put on LTIR

im assuming it would be similar to the Seabrook deal where MTL gets a pick/prospect + takes an unwanted contract...definitely won't be including assets like some people think

You won't get anything for Weber, Johnson was getting dumped and they paid a second to do it.

I don't understand the point of this? You pay to acquire a player, paying that player but that player is not going to play?

Only trade I could see where Montreal straight up gets an asset would be a McBain for Weber in the offseason if minny doesn’t move him ahead of time

I think the idea is they can put that contract on ltir and get back about half the money they’ll be payin Parise/Suter next year

I thought if you can fit him into your cap initially (which is why this would have to happen in the offseason) you could then place him on LTIR and get the savings?

Los Angeles has a development strategy that is completely opposite to the NY Rangers. The Kings are following the same plan with Vilardi that they previously used with Bjornfot, Durzi and Kaliyev and are using now with Byfield, Anderson-Dolan, Turcotte, Kupari and Fa-gem-o: at least one year in Ontario to become educated in the team structure as well as professional hockey. So far, it appears that this approach has served them all well. For example, the knock on Kaliyev when he was drafted was that he was a one-dimensional (offensive) player. His time in Ontario has clearly improved his defensive responsibility. The patient approach has also allowed them success along the way so that they are not discouraged with bumps in the metaphoric road. Durzi in particular looks like he believes that he is a top-4 defenseman with the swagger sufficient to justify his deployment as quarterback on the second power-play unit. He's also one of the two defensemen used on the six-man unit when the Kings have to pull the goalie when behind late.

You place a player on LTIR and you are allowed to exceed the cap by however much the contract is. In Weber's case 7.9M. So that 7.9M counts against the 81.5M cap, but you would be allowed to go to 89.4M. You don't "gain" any extra cap, the only benefit to trading him would be to a team like Arizona who need to hit the cap floor. Only because he is owed 6M in actual cash for the rest of the deal so they would save some money, but don't expect a return. Look at the Boychuk trade as an example.

I don’t think they get anything for the contract. But that’s where I’m confused, why does Friedman and the Minnesota beat reporter bring this up if it isn’t a thing. And why did a few years ago the Leafs acquire David Clarkson’s contract? I understand why Tampa did it with Seabrook because they essentially turned Johnson’s contract into LTIR money, and Boychuk got the Sabres to the cap floor, but I’m still confused then how the Clarkson contract worked for the leafs.

Tell Julien BriseBois that when he traded for first Marian Gaborik's contract two years ago and then Brent Seabrook's contract last season to for the express purpose to stick them on LTIR to gain spending room up to their cap hits for other players to field a full teams roster and remain under the cap ceiling because of it.

The contracts he brought in would of pushed the Lighting over the cap, but having the LTIR contracts offset them and allowed the team to stay cap compliant.

Wont factor in
Greenway will leave and be happy about it
He'll be getting a bigger role and more minutes
He's exactly the type of Player we need

Greenway makes the most sense as it maximize's the cap MIN has access to i'd figure
I doubt he'll see it as to much of a trade down with Suzuki,Caufield, and Anderson lighting it up under MSL
He'll likely Draw in on 2nd line as MSL like a guy with Size who can use it on each line if possible
His first successul move was Anderson to LW with Suzuki-Caufield they're all over a PPG:
CSA line together for 8 games

Suzuki 4-9-13
Caufield 5-7-12
Anderson 6-1-7

Since he's been trying to find Armia a similar place on both wings for a similar role
reality is Armia plays physical but not the way Marty found success with Anderson or even Pezetta
Armia's a Workhorse while Anderson is more of a Rodeo Clown taking all the heat so those around him can move freely

Greenway will fit that Anderson role as he can also make Statement hits making room for guys like Gally or Pitlick to cruise on by playing their style

Am I just dumb? I don't get how this "increases our cap". The idea of acquiring a LTIR player is so that you hit the cap floor but only pay 20% of that players salary since the other 80% is paid by insurance. I don't think it raises your cap. The way Tampa made it "raise their cap" is because cap is not accrued in the playoffs, so Kucherov was able to come off LTIR and they were over his cap hit by his AAV but that doesn't matter in the postseason. Weber is done, there's no coming back in the postseason for him.

Am I missing something?

Its $7.8 million cap hit for four years. And salary of $3m next year and $1m each of following years.

MIN cap hit now......,...$79.2 million
Add Shea Weber.........+$7.8 million

Total after Weber........$87.0 million

Current Cap Ceiling.....$81.5 million
LTIR needed...................$5.5 million

Weber's cash salary......$3.0 million

So "getting half back" only relates to the cash amount relative to AAV.
It does nothing to draw down the dead money from Parise/Suter buyouts.
They would get that extra $5.5 million in relief by paying only $3 million in cash.

This move would not gain more cap space, it would just reduce the Cash/AAV ratio.

Insurance is completely separate issue.
Not every player has insurance.
That is up to teams and each policy is done player by player.
It has no impact on salary cap - or what is actually due to player.
It is just a way a team can protect its cash flow.
Not related here.

There's also the Recapture Penalty to consider if Weber officially Retires
We're now in the final 4 years which means 6/7.8m cap hit goes to NSH if that happens
Its not a Huge factor but its a nice alternative to Buying him out if ever faced with that scenario

Weber's 6m salary owed is low and i think will really make him an ideal guy to trade to use to get cap relief for conteders for that reason
Be cool if they gave him a ring for it if they win lmfao

You are mixing up salary cap and cash flow.
Two very different things.
