He has played in 4 games for the isles, and he’s been a puck possession monster on every shift. Did not expect it at all. Maybe he realizes this might be his last opportunity to stick in the nhl

Buffalo traded a pair of 2nd rounders (one that became Cernak) + McNabb for Fasching and Nic Deslauriers when the former was still playing in college lol

Cool but how does this affect the Toronto Maple Leafs?

I don't understand how people can take a statement way out of context. People seriously think the Canucks are actively shopping Quinn Hughes...

While not actively shopping it was mentioned a Mammoth offer would get him. Management should have just said the duo are untouchable everyone else open season offer away

The mammoth offer would likely result in the biggest trade in recent NHL history. Look at the Canucks. They already suck defensively WITH Hughes. Imagine how bad it would be WITHOUT him.

OEL-Myers
Dermott-Schenn
Stillman-Bear

Management still wants to compete for some reason and that defense core is going absolutely NOWHERE tears of joy

OEL, Schenn, Myers would actually be a gross defense core if they actually lived up to their draft status. OEL actually was ELITE for a while but age did him dirty

someone really should've sent this to Benning before that trade went down (also applies to Allvin / Rutherford extending JT and possibly Horvat tho)

It doesn't and therefore doesn't matter at all.

Okaaay, but teams will pay for dumps and retention. Obviously. Anyway, only a few teams are in a worse cap situation than the Leafs. And there are teams in playoff spots right now that do have some cap space. There's a lot more leverage than there is panic that they have to make a bad trade or suffer. It's December, guy. And the Blues aren't in sell mode (a ka the original leverage point). None of these pie in the sky "we have you over a barrel" trades are happening. Nobody is giving away stars they're still using themselves for chicken feed because something something something. But try telling that to some folks around here...

Sure, teams will pay for retention, but the market on big money rentals at full cost is so barren because teams don't have the space. And because that market is so bad, retention becomes a near necessity to facilitate a deal for anybody, hence the scale of what can be expected from that changes.

Heh. Well, good luck with all that. I think you're having a little fun fooling yourself on this one, sir. Someone paid a 23 1st + for Chiarot with only minimal retention just this spring.

Chiarot.

The onus to get things done is on the team that wants the goodies - especially in that town with this team. Not the other way around. Nobody is going to fund Toronto's cap ambitions for free and there are other teams in better cap position to make these deals. That's the reality.

Not sure why you keep making this about the Leafs... who btw actually have a relatively favorable cap position with Muzzin not expected to return. This is the landscape of the league we're talking about.

And Chiarot was 50% retained - $1.75m, and we all knew he was was about to be overpaid for.

The blanket statement of the onus falling on the buyers just isn't true - it all depends on the market. Buyers and sellers need each other to make mutually beneficial deals.

I don't think you're understanding what I'm trying to say... All I'm getting at is that relative to a situation where a wealth of teams could afford big money rentals at cost, retention isn't the extra squeeze that it could be.

Definitely would have to be trying to entice NJ to make a move for him.

Argentina played 6 teams. There were 6 teams in NHL last time Leafs won a cup.
Argentina beat a French-speaking team in finals (France). The 1967 Leafs also beat a French-speaking team in finals (Montreal).
Argentina lost in the first round of knockout stage in last trip to tournament. Leafs...well, you know.
Argentina's top player is 3rd highest paid soccer player. Leafs top player is 3rd highest paid hockey player.

Wondering if it's a coincidence that Tampa moved good depth pieces in Katchouk and Raddysh in the same trade at the tdl, when they already gave 2 1sts for Hagel...

Tampa had to move those 2 in order to make Hagel's cap work

As if they traded for Hagel without those 2 Tampa would have had to waive em and they would have got claimed. Including them allowed for Tampa to ensure they didnt lose assets

OK so I see the value in Hagel now (playing well currently) - BUT he was barely NHL-calibre last playoff. I can be quoted in old posts somewhere on the interweb as saying he was one of the worst NHLers I've ever seen...and he was last May-July.

That said - who/whom could be the next "Hagel's-deals" for playoff-bound clubs in similar positions, needing real-time skaters & not prospects/futures??

As of now I dont think there is a Hagel like guy for 2023. Will need to wait till the TDL but so far nobody on a cheap deal with term on a bad team has been over the moon good

Like maybe Adam Ruzicka but I doubt Flames trade him
