Big but realistic offseason

Created by: TheRealisticGuy
Team: 2023-24 Montreal Canadiens
Initial Creation Date: Jan. 11, 2023
Published: Jan. 12, 2023
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Edmundson isn't traded at the 2023 TDL because Kent Hughes can't get a 2023 1st round pick for Eddy. With Guhle injury, Edmundson remains with the team and will be dealt at the 2024 TDL
Monahan is being dealt at the 2023 TDL. Drouin & Dadonov too if there is a buyer. If we can't use the 3 retention slots on Monahan, Drouin & Dadonov, we could retained as a 3rd team on rentals only

Draft day : MTL draft outside of the top 5, probably 6-7-8. I would expect them to draft Dalibor Dvorsky with their own 2023 1st round pick and draft Sandin Pellikka with FLO 1st round pick (around 15)

Laval Rocket :

Farrell-Richard-Roy
Heineman-Mesar-Simoneau
Gignac-Kidney-Belzile
Condotta-Mysak-Teasdale
Veteran

Beaudin-Barron
Struble-Dello
Fairbrother-Mailloux
Trudeau

Portillo
Dobes

Players on the taxi squad goes back in their respective league (Beck CHL the 3 others overseas)

I expect MTL to trade Joel Edmundson & Mike Hoffman at the 2024 TDL while retaining 50% of their salary

Line up after the 2024 TDL :

Caufield-Suzuki-Dach
Slafkovsky-Pageau-Anderson
Comtois-Dvorak-Gallagher
RHP/Ylönen-Evans-Armia

Guhle-Savard
Harris-Kovacevic
Xhekaj-Barron

2.
MTL
  1. Trineyev, Bogdan
Additional Details:
Only a B prospect because of Matheson cap hit a little high
Trade made during the 2023 Offseason
WSH
  1. Matheson, Michael
Additional Details:
WSH are staying competitive and Matheson could replace Orlov (Matheson is younger with 3 years left on his deal)
3.
MTL
  1. Portillo, Erik [Reserve List]
Additional Details:
Good goalie prospect who isn't signing with BUF
BUF
  1. Tuch, Luke [Reserve List]

Pageau has been great lately. We're not cap dumping him.

Would MTL do Armia, Montembeault, and a 2nd for Beauvillier in the off-season?

Id go for Levi in Buffalo, much higher ceiling IMO. We're also not trading Matheson after one year, especially if Edmundson goes

Anaheim declines, Comtois is at least an NHL player, Pitlick has had changes of scenery multiple times and he can't make it stick.

I think the Caps trade is fine but I think they will just end up re-signing Orlov which would leave no room for Matheson.

Fair enough for Pageau, I should have done a post on the proposition only before making this AGM

For Beauvillier, we aren't welling to give you draft pick or prospect for him
I doubt we have wingers you would be welling to swap for, maybe Hoffman half retained vs Beauvillier

Pageau has not been great, mediocre is more accurate , but he has enough value to return a 3rd or 4th rd pick

The islanders aren’t trading Beau for a guy who isn’t half the player Cal Clutterbuck was in his prime.

He’s been fine, but he has to stop throwing the puck away. This whole team picked up bad habits under trotz. Bailey was much better against Dallas imo because he wasn’t just throwing the puck away the entire game.

No team is paying to dump a productive player on a reasonable contract. Pageau’s contract issues were very overstated when he came back from his wrist injury last year. I’ll be the first one to tell you that was a mistake. Hell I was worried about Pulock for no good reason. The isles would be fine rn if they had Pelech. That’s the only issue that would keep them out of the playoffs imo.

Matheson has looked good for us and we absolutely will not be trading him because Kent gave up a pretty big package for him and likes him. Also Isles decline, and Primeau is not an NHL calibre goalie.

He gets top line minutes and has 1 even strength goal in 529 min of ice time. Not acceptable

Petry and Poehling for Matheson and a fourth was an absolute steal by Montreal. Not sure if it reflects well on Hughes or it’s just about how bad Hextall is tho lol. Montreal is in a weird spot cause they’ve done well in the late rounds recently, but their past first round picks have been kinda suspect. Slafkovsky might’ve been a reach and Mallioux isn’t even allowed to play rn. I like Mesar tho!

Oh I see. I didn’t think he got top line minutes tbh. I think his best game this year was in Calgary when Barzal was out. He played way more freely with the puck then, and when Barzal plays he gets this idea his only role is defensive.

I feel like most of the bottom six acts like they don’t know what to do with the puck once they get it, and it’s because trotz only used them in a defensive role during his time on the island. In part it was because they didn’t have the talent too back then.

Would think the caps would still prefer to bring Orlov back, but don't hate that move from their perspective at all if other things don't go their way
