Team: 2023-24 New York Islanders
Initial Creation Date: May 6, 2023
Published: May 6, 2023
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Scenario: Lou retires and a new management takes over. Inspired by the Rangers quick ascent, Islanders want to get younger, faster, and aim for the future. They don't want to tank with some good players on team, but serious need to retool.

Goal: build solid foundation around 4 key players (Barzal, Dobson, Horvat, Sorokin) and aim for 2025/26 contention window. Load up on 1 or 2 year contracts, trade away bulk, take chances on rebuilding players (Zadina, Gurianov etc.), insulate core. With Sorokin in net and some solid pieces around him, totally bottoming out isn't an option.

NOTES:
-Gurianov won't get QO'd and will become a UFA
-Ideally trade Palmieri but I don't see any team taking him on with that 16 team NTC (maybe can trade in last year of deal with retention) but good veteran presence either way
-Lee, similar to Palmieri, unmovable. Good captain who loves long Island, keeping him keeps the locker room in check

Wahlstrom has been a lot better than Zadina, would rather continue to develop him than a guy who hasn’t shown anything at the NHL level

Sure, but that's why they're getting paid for him while also dumping off a bad contract. Zadina is the same age but hasn't found a role in Detroit. Selling high on Aho and getting rid of Clutterbuck is a worthwhile deal to take a big swing on Zadina. I don't see Aho coming back with 4 solid D anyways.

Looks like it's just Wallman, Chiarot, and Maatta right now. I'd imagine Edvinsson gets another year in the AHL (to start at least) and Aho is a really good PP stop gap. Running 4LD and 2RD isn't the end of the world (most teams do this anyways) plus, looks like Wallman and Chiarot played some serious minutes together last year (unless I'm mistaken). Bottom pair of Aho-Lindstrom is most likely good

Seriously the Detroit trade makes no sense for either team.

Aho was great for the isles and he’s cheap for another year, with the isles lack of puck moving on the backend they can’t afford to move him right now

Lindstrom stinks and is currently looking for a team in Sweden to play for next season. Edvinsson is out 4-6 months after shoulder surgery but he'll slot in LD eventually. Chiarot will be playing RD when Edvinsson returns. There's no room for Aho in Detroit.

Walman plays with Seider. Chiarot began playing the season with Seider but the 2 didn't mesh. Walman fits Seider like a glove and Seider started racking up the points immediately after pairing with him.

Edvinsson's injury gives Johansson an opportunity and Yzerman will give him a chance in training camp to see where he's at. McIsaac might even get a look for 7D.

Edvinsson is hurt but once back will be with the team, we also have mcissac if we needed a call up which would be same as aho. Wings don't need or want clutterbuck at all, so this trade makes no sense from a wings perspective. Zadina for wahlstrom is more then fair

Wait until this guy finds out about Albert Johansson, who looked to be fighting for a spot in the pre-season last year.

Hawks would probably rather use their 2nd rounders to trade up in the draft rather than trade for Wahlstrom

Lmao a 31yo 35+ goal scorer and PPG player making 6m for 2 more years is worth more than a mid 20s pick.

Wahlstrom is a nice player but can't see the Hawks trading what amounts to two 2nd's to get him (the actual pick and the 2nd it takes to dump Bailey)

Why would the Hawks dump Bailey he has 1 year left at $5M and they're struggling to hit the floor. If he plays decently, you retain half and trade him for a third or a fourth. It's a very worthwhile proposition for a basement team

Oilers save $2M for next season by making that move and get a solid bottom 6 player without giving up much. Seems like a win to me.

I mispoke. I meant Chiarot-Maatta, not Wallman. Looks like Detroit has a solid top 4 and then a few young guys vying for spots. I think a guy like Aho can push the pace a little and make some of the younger guys work harder to earn that spot. Not everyone can come in and be a superstar or even play at a solid NHL level (expecting Edvinsson to walk in as a rookie after a lengthy injury is wishful thinking). One year under a mill, even if he gets pushed out of the lineup, Aho is a very valuable asset other teams would lineup for. Again like I said, a good stop gap for Detroit who is looking to make an actual playoff push this year, not just "develop" for another season

You misunderstood my point. The Hawks are giving up the 2nd that the Isles would pay the Hawks to take Bailey, plus they are sending the Isles pick #44. So that's the two 2nd's for Wahlstrom.

I understand your thinking but I think Detroit is better off not trying to aim for a playoff spot considering our lack of forward depth.

I think Wahlstrom is worth a little more than that. He's got a good ceiling but may need a change of scenery

Why would Edmonton trade their 1st pairing RHD and a very effective winger for an overpaid 3rd line center?
