No way CBJ would be giving a the third overall and more for two upcoming UFAs.

Columbus declines easy, no way they are trading 3rd OA for two pending UFAs let alone adding Boqvist and Roslovic for them.

The trade would have to include 2 extensions but the Jackets need help at centre and LD and this solves that longterm

I think if we were in season I’d agree but in the previous summer once July 1st hits they can negotiate extensions and sometimes it happens verbally at the draft

Sorry, teams don't give up so much for in effect UFAs, especially no playoff teams Gee, the Flames didn't pay a trade premium to sign UFAs Markstrom, Coleman, Kadri, and Tanev.
Gee, if Lindholm and Hanifan wanna get out of poor Calgary situation why would they want to get a worse situation in Columbus long term./

I still wouldn’t move 3rd OA plus for them with extensions, they do need help in both positions but it seems like that’s a move they make if they try to rush into being competitive like the rangers have done.

May I remind you of the mark stone trade. And that happened at the deadline which is less likely to get an extension than in the previous summe

Verbal agreements cant be placed on contracts. and the buying team is under no incentive to overpay for them to be pre-signed

Yeah, I remember the Mark Stone situation. He was traded for what the 15th overalll and second rounder at trade deadline. Certainly not an unreasonable return for team (Vegas) on a Cup run.
Now Stone had reached a "financial agreement" with the Sens on his $$$ value, but just didn't want to sign with the Sens. He and Vegas knew what he wanted, so contract extension for easier.

CBJ aren't are playoff run and to give up the third overall is way too much to give up. And certainly Lindholm and Hanifan have no motivation to sign with a last place team. For the Flames to "tell" their two players to sign an extension so they can be traded.....well that doesn't likely happen. And what happens the two players get so pissed with the Flames they refuse to even talk extension.

Sorry, this has become a real bad trait on CF....trying to justify trades by including extensions.

To quote Yogi Berra, "Verbal agreements aren't worth the paper they are written on."

At the time Brannstrom was one of the best prospects in the entire league. Probably the equivalent of a cutter Gauthier or Jiricek

If you go back and read the ‘rumored’ price on Stone now, it’s crazy.

This from an earlier ACGM

“At the time of the deal, Stone was the NHL leader in Goals-above-Replacement (GAR) and the expectations were for a massive return for Ottawa. BOS, CGY, NSH, NYI and WPG were the most common teams linked to him before deadline. The asking price at the time was " four assets, including a first-round pick and an A-level prospect" according to Fourth Period. Pat Steinberg said the ask from Calgary was "multiple 1sts, one of Valimaki, Andersson, Kylington, and more". From others, Craig Custance said it was "at least two first-round picks" and more.

But the actual return was a lot less than expected since Stone was uncertain to sign and wanted top dollar. Erik Brannstrom, who at the time was The Athletic's 19th best from outside the NHL, and a pick in the late 2nd round.“

As good as Lindholm is I’ve learned he’s overrated on capfriendly. And no way does the 3OA get dealt for rentals.

I'm honestly adverse to giving up 3rd ovr even if both players are extended (kinda a given if CBJ are trading for them anyway). Lindholm is a short term 1C, long term 2C ideally given his current age. I wouldn't be willing to move the best shot at a long term 1C in that deal. I'm willing to pay up on picks/prospects/youth for both players if Calgary decides to move them and wants that, but 3 isn't even up for discussion this offseason for me unless it's for Petty (not happening) or a trade down to 5 (if they decide they want Smith, hopefully not)

You know what team I could actually see do a Hanafin + Lindholm blockbuster

Carolina

Making an ACGM right now trying to piece it together but man Carolina could be really scary next year

Even in the article that started this the Author said it would need to be Lindholm + an asset to get the 3 OA. I'd prefer to keep Lindholm as he is one of the few two way centers that will age well (as opposed to Kadri). The only saving grace of the Kadri deal is that he will probably be on LTIR the last year's of his contract.

The problem is that would be more of the same for them. They need a highly skilled offensive player.

They can still go get that as Carolina got a lot of cap space rn and will get more next year

Like they can make this trade and still have space for someone like Tarasenko

Tarasenko doesn’t move the needle enough. They should target Keller
