Interesting Nylander to CHI deal built upon

Created by: Leafsfan98
Team: 2023-24 Toronto Maple Leafs
Initial Creation Date: Aug. 24, 2023
Published: Aug. 24, 2023
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
I saw a Nylander to Chicago trade that most people don't like... But I do for both sides... Nylander comes with a 9x8 extension... The truth is, the Leafs either need to ship Nylander to have enough cap to remain competitive or sign Nylander

Trades
TOR
  1. Johnson, Tyler ($2,500,000 retained)
  2. Reichel, Lukas
  3. 2024 2nd round pick (VAN)
  4. 2025 1st round pick (TOR)
  5. 2026 2nd round pick (TOR)
CHI
  1. Nylander, William
Additional Details:
This is a trade I saw someone else post and liked... I know Hawks fans might say: "it's too early" but Bedard needs to play with someone who has talent... And Chicago will still be in lottery contention

Johnson only has a year left, so it gives the Leafs flexibility next offseason to sign others... Knies-Reichel-Minten seems like a nasty combo next year too... And I feel as though this gives the Leafs another dynamic to their lines

Again, this isn't for Hawks fans to comment on, I already know you think it's too early... But it's more of question for Leafs fans; would you see this working?

How do you propose an extension? Extensions don't happen for players and Nylander in the Leafs situation EVER.

If nylander signs that, the leafs are better off keeping him, especially for a return anything like that.

I mean, Leafs ask Nylander: "Do you want to go to Chicago longterm if we trade you?" and Nylander replies with yes to play with Bedard... And because of the lower taxes in the US... I see Nylander taking a mill off to 9 mill per season

I could for both sides. Yes it seems more beneficial for Leafs than Chicago in a rebuild. But look at Montreal, they traded firsts recently. This is probably the first trade on here that realizes one problem with a Nylander trade. If you trade Nylander for let's say Byram, yes Byram would be great for us defensively, the points lost from Nylander gone not only relates to Nylander but to Tavares as well. This trade allows a future in Reichel in first but also gives a half replacement in Johnson. This could work out in a money saving money to shore the defence.

No chance. Nylander isn't worth all that unless he's signed to an 8x8 extension. Hawks are all in on rebuilding through the draft. They wouldn't make a move like this for another year or 2. Nylander fits better with LA.

How do the Leafs fit Nylander in while still being competitive with depth? They have too many guys making 9 mill+ to have another one... And also, Nylander might lower his asking price on a US team bc of lower taxes

Name one trade EVER, when a Cup contending team allowing one of its star players to negotiate a contract with another team, one full season away from his contract ending.

From the Hawks perspective it's not only too early, but the value isn't there. Just look at the Seth Jones trade. I'm not suggesting there aren't dumb teams out there. I'm just hopeful it's not the Hawks...this time around.

It's not negotiating a contract: It's just ensuring that the other team sign Nylander long term... And technically speaking Matthew Tkachuk, PLD, Severson in recent memory

The same way they have made it all work the whole time. They don't overpay depth players.

I think the Hawks would be stupid to give Bedard to the wolves in his 1rst season

Easily, the leafs have tons of cap room and the cap is set to explode. And no, he doesnt have a lower asking price in the states because rich people taxes do not work like that. It is a myth made popular by people with zero understanding of taxes and accounting

Or, Nylander could really help a team like the Kraken? Which seems as a pretty complete team - except needing elite talent. Could be a FINAL piece for them?

1st of all you win this trade, second of all, you guys tend to say no unless it's so grossly one sided in your favor that it's impossible take you seriously.

And how do you ensure that? The best 2 ways to acquire depth pieces are: FA and the draft... Leafs don't have a ton of draft capital and free agents always ask for more than their worth

Thanks for proving my point. PLD and Tkachuk, were RFAs and able to negotiate with any team. Severson's contract had ending, and was three weeks way from being able to negotiate any team.

How could the Hawks ensure they sign Nylander even if the trade happened? Nylander would have all the leverage, and be forced to overpay. Sorry these types of sign and trades are nonsensical....that's why they don't happen EVER.

And the Leafs have a ton of holes they need to fill, half their team comes off the books this year... So how to you justify giving, arguably your 5th, best player 9 mill+?
