Good stuff, still not sure what the Flames identity will be. I'm sure Huby is going to bounce back in a big way, but what about the rest of your core? Hopefully this is an indication that Lindholm could be sticking around

Terms Iffy (he'll be 37 at contract expiry), but he's the new captain and he actually wants to be there, so I don't think anybody should complain.

It's basically solid 3C money for his 35+ years so it's good value for both parties and provides stability to a franchise that really needs it.

Flames have all the distractions behind them now and have the talent and depth to be a playoff contender. If they put it together for the full season, it will be really hard for the Central Division to claim either of the wildcard spots.

I have my reservations on this one TBH... But does this mean hockey's officially back?

Great deal for the team! Backlund has been underrated his whole career, glad someone is staying there! Hopefully can get others to stay with him!

Here's the problem. Last season was his best offensive season... ever. If he slips below 40 points like he had the previous season, then this is not going to look good.

Nah, even if he's like 15 goals, 35 points, he still provides insane value. Over his career he's been a consistently great defensive forward, with an offensive impact somewhere from above average to great depending on the year.

Maybe one year too long – it’s a 3-year commitment since there’s still one year left on his current deal – but he still seems to be at the top of his game, and his value to this team goes beyond the numbers he puts up, so I’m ok with it, especially if it helps them convince Lindholm to stay. (He’s the only other one I consider high priority. The other pending UFAs can be replaced if they don’t want to stay.)

This is huge for us Flames fans. The man (who has been a very solid player for us for a long time) has been rumoured to be wanting out all summer and now he signs an extension and is named captain. Maybe now Lindholm and even Hanifin will decide to follow Back’s footsteps and stick around for a while.

It seems like a fair deal for what Backlund brings. It's also more important than just the boxcars and AAV. Keeping Backlund should encourage guys like Lindholm and Hanafin to consider resigning. If the lost Backlund the team would lose a big part of it's identity and they're having a hard enough time figuring out what that identity is in the first place

It’s a bit rich, I’d have preferred $3-4mil/yr (I mean Jordan Staal signed $2.9mil and Joe Pavelski signed for $3.5mil), but that’s what it seems to take for Calgary to sign guys lately and the Cap is expected to go up next season, so it should be fine

Backlund did come in 2nd in Fitness, so he’s still dedicated and in great shape for his age and the Team already recognized him as the Captain, so it’s nice to get it done and formalize his Captaincy

Give Backlund & Mangiapane a more offensively focussed Winger like Huberdeau’s, Dube, Sharangovich, Pelletier or Coronato and he should put up 0.67+ PPG again; perhaps he has another career year

$4.5 million is a lot of a 3c.

I see that changing going forward with cap increases Many 3C contracts that have been signed over the past year that extend into the future are in the $3 to $5 mil range.

Minimum $3 mil for a decent 3C. Backlund is a 2C playing 3C and provides leadership kinda like Jordan Staal in Carolina's deal that just expired.

Good signing for Calgary. A realistic price for Backlund.

He for sure could of got more on the open market.
