CBJ get 1.6 mil in cap space for free, Buffalo gets a winger they can use while their whole team is injured. Pretty fair trade but leans slightly in CBJs favor because Robinson is not worth 1.6mil.
Arguably the biggest pool of tradable assets in the league, they have their core that's locked up through their prime, their obvious weakness are on D and G, they have a 13 year and counting playoff drought, and this is the move they make.
sabres are doing poorly defensively so they decided to help to situation by getting a guy whose chart looks like this
Sabres are too young, too soft and dealing with a lot of injuries, so they decided to help the situation by adding a veteran 28-year-old 6'2 205lb forward for the small price of a 7th round draft pick.

could've added someone who isn't a massive liability in the d zone
Fair deal. Either he gets a good start and contributes in BUF and CBJ gets a pick or he’s a bust and BUF keeps their pick and I guess they just bury 1.15 mil in the minors.
Like who? There have been what? 5 trades made all season. It takes two to tango.
Please elaborate how they could have done that...
briefly looking over players in similar situations, someone like Jankowski or Gauthier could've filled the same role and would've been cheaper.
Personally I wouldn't have made the trade, because I fail to see how Robinson improves the Sabres or would even be a reliable stop-gap for the injury issues you pointed out. He's useless offensively and a liability defensively.
Long term this is a meaningless move. I wouldn't get to defensive over people not liking it.

I wouldn't get defensive over it either. Apparently, he isn't useless because he has over 266GP at the NHL level. By definition, he has been used. Are you positive Jankowski or Gauthier were available yesterday to trade for?
BUF literally needed a "body". The injuries to Tuch, Greenway and Girgensons are relatively short-term and then whomever they acquired in a trade would need to be deemed expendable.

Well, 1 game in and he scored a goal (questionably disallowed), had a breakaway, and a couple of 2-1's (one of which resulted in a goal). Played 1 min on the PK, no goals against there.
Perhaps now you can see how he improved the Sabres?
Obviously, a very small sample size, but 1 or all 3 of Tuch, Greenway, Girgensons will be back in the next 1-5 games. At which point, the Sabres can waive Robinson if they deem fit and all it costs them was some money.
