The closer it gets to the day when JT can walk out the door, the harder it will be for him to stay with that gong show of a team.
The islanders really have to prove to him that they are worth resigning with. They got Eberle to play with him and they tried to get Duchene as well--that goes a long way as far as goodwill showing. They are making attempts but I don't know if JT wants to stay if they are going to continue to play in the excuse for an arena and the ownership is questionable meaning they could uproot the team. I would not be shocked to see them move out of New York. Maybe Barzal and Ho-Sang will show him that there is a future for the team. I think convincing JT to stay comes in three stages. One this offseason, which they are doing a good job appeasing him with Eberle. They got a lot for Hamonic which is great for their asset management. Two: the trade deadline if they are in a playoff spot they have to push using their pick or CGYs pick to get the big fish. If they aren't in a playoff spot JT is not resigning. Three: the playoffs they have to go at least to round two. It all comes down to this season, which means JT is going to play out of his mind to have the Brinks trucks roll up to his house.
If he does go to free agency what does that contract start with 8 or 9? I do like what tadhockey said Carolina makes sense. Montreal makes a lot of sense too, however...they're another team that I look at them and they have a lot of questions from top to bottom why would he leave one organization with a lot of question marks to go to another one with maybe bigger question marks that is a topic for another thread though.
I think the contestants in the Tavares sweepstakes's are
Boston they do have some decisions to make but if they want to win very quickly they can move some pieces and they have some decent prospects to fill the cheap wingers like Pittsburgh did.
Carolina basically they are a mishmash of former blackhawks and some really good homegrown talent. Staal and Tavares down the middle is good but their winger depth is something I am not familiar with. They have a deep pool of prospects, at least that's what I'm told, and also really seem like they are going to make a push this year for a wild card spot.
Calgary which would just be nasty to have a power play of Johnny Hockey Tavares Monahan Hamilton and who cares as your number 1 unit they do have some questions in their line up, also with the west falling off the odds of making the playoffs are getting better the problem you have the oilers to deal with in division and are going to have to play them in at least round two of the playoffs. They also have the situation with wanting a new arena and the luncheon meeting there is another opportunity where a team could move.
Ny Islanders resigning is probably they most likely option as we saw with Stamkos who had his hand on the door knob to free agency. But they have to prove themselves to Tavares.
Winnipeg they have a great prospect pool and the idea of Tavares fishing the puck over to Laine sort of scares me. Honestly I don't have a good reason why they wouldn't be in besides their questionable goaltending...which can be fixed with one good move.
If he does make it to free agency someone is going to move heaven and earth for the cap space to snag him up.
I didn't include Arizona and Vegas (which he would really help both franchises and if I'm being fair Arizona does meet the same standards I set for other teams in terms of a good prospect pool) is I don't know how much actual dollars they are able to commit. The dollars and cents are more important there. They are not like the leafs and can afford to have a Robidas Island.
Personally, I want him to leave and just create the chaos that Stamkos did except go through with it and sign with someone else. It's going to be quite a stir, which is also what I was hoping would happen with Price, but Montreal took care of that real quick before any nonsense could happen. I don't know if resigns. I think it's 50/50 right now and the season with dictate where the needle shifts.

What I mean is: wait for the season to start and then when teams begin to realize there weak on offence they become all the more willing to may more for Duchene then they do now.</div></div>

The fact they had a deal on the table with the Islanders and Sakic said no--when the team has to start doing something and not just be stagnate--to a package of Hamonic a first and a prospect (Not Barzal maybe Ho-Sang). He needs to do something and that seemed like a good start. Let's be real though Sakic is overvaluing his pieces and other teams are trying to a razor to the price after a terrible season and worlds. But I think the question needs to be posed: what are the Colorado Avalanche? Are they rebuilding...no they're keeping everyone and sold Iginla and their forth liner for a 4th (which I don't think they got because Igina probably wont sign with LA) and and Andrighetto (who might turn into something descent). There actions suggest that they are trying to go for it when Nashville basically just dumped Colin Wilson on them. I think Wilson is a great player. If Sakic is fired that is when the the Avalanche will start changing.
Sakic has done a terrible job with assist management letting Grigorenko go with out even qualifying him to try to flip his rights for anything. Look just north to their buddies in the windy city, they trade rights away like no ones business (Shaw, Darling, Saad, Raanta,) to get assists back. You can not tell me that someone wouldn't take a flyer on a young player--gms love their magic beans and what players can become--for any sort of long shot prospect or draft pick. If we look back on Sakic's trade history it is not great. He is probably going to get the raw end of any Duchene deal.</div></div>

To give you the actual math behind this we will use the two players which filled both criteria you listed the weight and league in Nylander and Pastrnak.
Petterson had a points per game (the best indicator of success in any league) of .95349 in his draft year.
In Nylander's draft year he posed a .72973 however he had spent time in the SHL that year. He followed that season by playing in the SHL and posting a .95238 before coming over to the AHL.
Pastrnak only played in the second tear league he had posted a .66667.
Here is why people might be saying he is a bust. It is a second tier league, meaning he is playing against softer competition. Unlike a Nylander he has not proven that he can preform at a higher league yet. He has preformed better than Pastrnak and Nylander at that level, but both of them came over to the AHL that year after and put up great numbers for their respective clubs. It is all about the track record and not the player. Right now there is a question if he can play at a higher level.
Lets look at other players drafted out of the same league who were also on the smaller side who have made NHL lineups.
Joakim Nordstrom (6'1 160)
Gustav Nyquist (5'10 169)
It all comes down to how he plays next year in the SHL or the AHL. It is just preferable to draft out of the SHL. You would assume that they are playing against better competition and are closer to making the jump to North America. Its where you find more consistently your Jakob Silverbergs, Alexander Wennbergs, Mika Zibanejads. And that is the big thing with drafting out of that league. On average the second tier league does not continuously produce top end, blue chip prospects out of the first round and a half.
