Boston Bruins signed Ryan Spooner (1 Year / $2,825,000 AAV)
A "prove to me actually how much you are worth contract". It's not bad, not great. If he has a break out year then the Bruins are going to break out a small wallet. If he doesn't another small deal wouldn't hurt.

I think Drouin's game is more suited for the wing. Galch is probably the better option at center and his numbers support that he should be a center. The problem is Montreal does not see him as a center. Montreal's weakness is at center. I don't think you can have another year of Danault as your first line center.
They should maybe look in their AHL team at give McCarron a shot at playing center because the Habs do not view Galch as a center. Also you want to solve this problem internally, you really do not want to send a ton of assets for a "number 1 center" because those are going to be very expensive. In free agency you are going to be overpaying them because it will be a bidding war. Personally I would like to see the Habs finally give Charles Hudon Michael MacCarron and Nikita Sherback a shot in the line up.

Most Hated Player
Current: Brad Marchand, I would love him if he was on my team, but hate when my team plays against him. He more just annoys me rather than I have a passionate hate for him. Again though if he was on my team, probably would like him. He's done some pretty questionable things, like using D. Sedin's as he personal punching bag and the diving and the cheap shots, spearing someone in the nads (Dotchin kind of had it coming). However, It's not like he is a terrible person off the ice. Actually he is a pretty respectable guy and I do think he does a lot for for Make-A-Wish and the fans. He's very much a Derek Jeter type who will do anything to win.
Other Current: Alex Burrows. The stick work and the things he's said I have a deep dislike of him. I'm going to take a page out of Johanson's book and say I honestly don't know how people cheered for him with of the things he's said and done.
Players I could see in the future: Jake Dotchin, he's give out some pretty nasty stuff in the AHL and NHL. He <em>really</em> has not made friends in Toronto.
Matthew Tkachuk-He's pretty bold for a rookie and has all ready been suspended once. I can see if he continues this behavior that people will hate him.

Worldwide Hockey 2021
At first I was trying to think of why in the world would the NHL place a team in Houston, and then I remembered, that the Rockets just got put up for sale and have a pretty good arena, it financially makes more sense for two teams (basketball and hockey) to share an arena. Also Houston is a business city with plenty of corporations to buy box seats. It actually make a lot of sense. Good on you! Personally A team in Milwaukee but I don't know if the Bucks stadium is able to have ice. Also thank you for having 8 teams per division the current divisions drive me bonkers because they are uneven.
I've taken some marketing classes and a few business classes and your proposal of putting a team in Houston is viable. The problem is you would have to put a good team in Houston so the fan-base can grow creatively quickly.

I think its a center v winger thing. Centers just make more than wingers I am pretty cheap when it comes to players so I would say my max for Palat would be 5 mil because those 4.5-6 million dollar contracts kill a team. you're paying a lot for good, not great.

Kessel Trade
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>ON3M4N</b></div><div>Kessel is an interesting case. Over the last three years he's top 25 in scoring in the NHL, signed at a cap hit of $6.8 million for 5 more years and about to hit 30yr old. He's a very good offensive player, but until he went to PIT he was never able to lead a team in the playoffs (only made it 3 times and only past the 1st round once). It odd, but I look at Kessel and feel like he's a great player, but he's a complementary player. He's not a guy I'm betting on to lead my team and really I'm bringing him in to boost what I have to maybe add some depth scoring.
I'd say a 1st + young NHL ready player (maybe has the talent but is struggling) + teams top 5 prospect + mid-prospect or pick
A package using Boston that I'd consider....1st + 3rd + Vatrano + Spooner. Maybe swap out Spooner for a prospect like DeBrusk
He's probably still worth a package similar to what PIT paid. The cups don't add to his value IMO, but again I think that's because when you play on a team with two of the world best and even without Kessel the Pens are a threat every year to win the cup.</div></div>
Unfortunately we disagree in one thing. There is something (in GMs minds, not my own) that cups show he is a proven winner. It's like what The blue jackets paid for Saad originally. I think they fell in love with playoff saad and the shine of his two rings. I do think the package you put together was fair value.

I think it comes down to risk v reward. If you sign Drisital at 8+ And accepts what are the odds that those 4 first round picks are going to be good. Would you rather have 1 Drisital or potential four good players. If they are late first rounders you can make an argument that they won't be as good but what if it back fires and Edmonton gets a top ten, even a lottery winner pick out of those. Look at the Dustin Penner what if they would have selected some of the other much better players avaible

I think between 8.5 and 9.5 is what he is worth. But this comes down to what McDavid/Drisital sign for. They are going to be the new bench mark. The logic goes if McDavid makes 13 million dollars and I am half of McDavid then I deserve 6.5.

Thread:
Does John Tavares re-sign?
The closer it gets to the day when JT can walk out the door, the harder it will be for him to stay with that gong show of a team.
The islanders really have to prove to him that they are worth resigning with. They got Eberle to play with him and they tried to get Duchene as well--that goes a long way as far as goodwill showing. They are making attempts but I don't know if JT wants to stay if they are going to continue to play in the excuse for an arena and the ownership is questionable meaning they could uproot the team. I would not be shocked to see them move out of New York. Maybe Barzal and Ho-Sang will show him that there is a future for the team. I think convincing JT to stay comes in three stages. One this offseason, which they are doing a good job appeasing him with Eberle. They got a lot for Hamonic which is great for their asset management. Two: the trade deadline if they are in a playoff spot they have to push using their pick or CGYs pick to get the big fish. If they aren't in a playoff spot JT is not resigning. Three: the playoffs they have to go at least to round two. It all comes down to this season, which means JT is going to play out of his mind to have the Brinks trucks roll up to his house.
If he does go to free agency what does that contract start with 8 or 9? I do like what tadhockey said Carolina makes sense. Montreal makes a lot of sense too, however...they're another team that I look at them and they have a lot of questions from top to bottom why would he leave one organization with a lot of question marks to go to another one with maybe bigger question marks that is a topic for another thread though.
I think the contestants in the Tavares sweepstakes's are
Boston they do have some decisions to make but if they want to win very quickly they can move some pieces and they have some decent prospects to fill the cheap wingers like Pittsburgh did.
Carolina basically they are a mishmash of former blackhawks and some really good homegrown talent. Staal and Tavares down the middle is good but their winger depth is something I am not familiar with. They have a deep pool of prospects, at least that's what I'm told, and also really seem like they are going to make a push this year for a wild card spot.
Calgary which would just be nasty to have a power play of Johnny Hockey Tavares Monahan Hamilton and who cares as your number 1 unit they do have some questions in their line up, also with the west falling off the odds of making the playoffs are getting better the problem you have the oilers to deal with in division and are going to have to play them in at least round two of the playoffs. They also have the situation with wanting a new arena and the luncheon meeting there is another opportunity where a team could move.
Ny Islanders resigning is probably they most likely option as we saw with Stamkos who had his hand on the door knob to free agency. But they have to prove themselves to Tavares.
Winnipeg they have a great prospect pool and the idea of Tavares fishing the puck over to Laine sort of scares me. Honestly I don't have a good reason why they wouldn't be in besides their questionable goaltending...which can be fixed with one good move.
If he does make it to free agency someone is going to move heaven and earth for the cap space to snag him up.
I didn't include Arizona and Vegas (which he would really help both franchises and if I'm being fair Arizona does meet the same standards I set for other teams in terms of a good prospect pool) is I don't know how much actual dollars they are able to commit. The dollars and cents are more important there. They are not like the leafs and can afford to have a Robidas Island.
Personally, I want him to leave and just create the chaos that Stamkos did except go through with it and sign with someone else. It's going to be quite a stir, which is also what I was hoping would happen with Price, but Montreal took care of that real quick before any nonsense could happen. I don't know if resigns. I think it's 50/50 right now and the season with dictate where the needle shifts.

What I mean is: wait for the season to start and then when teams begin to realize there weak on offence they become all the more willing to may more for Duchene then they do now.</div></div>
The fact they had a deal on the table with the Islanders and Sakic said no--when the team has to start doing something and not just be stagnate--to a package of Hamonic a first and a prospect (Not Barzal maybe Ho-Sang). He needs to do something and that seemed like a good start. Let's be real though Sakic is overvaluing his pieces and other teams are trying to a razor to the price after a terrible season and worlds. But I think the question needs to be posed: what are the Colorado Avalanche? Are they rebuilding...no they're keeping everyone and sold Iginla and their forth liner for a 4th (which I don't think they got because Igina probably wont sign with LA) and and Andrighetto (who might turn into something descent). There actions suggest that they are trying to go for it when Nashville basically just dumped Colin Wilson on them. I think Wilson is a great player. If Sakic is fired that is when the the Avalanche will start changing.
Sakic has done a terrible job with assist management letting Grigorenko go with out even qualifying him to try to flip his rights for anything. Look just north to their buddies in the windy city, they trade rights away like no ones business (Shaw, Darling, Saad, Raanta,) to get assists back. You can not tell me that someone wouldn't take a flyer on a young player--gms love their magic beans and what players can become--for any sort of long shot prospect or draft pick. If we look back on Sakic's trade history it is not great. He is probably going to get the raw end of any Duchene deal.</div></div>

Is Travis Hamonic a #1 defensemen?
Comparative to his new teammates Hamonic is a behind Giordano (by a wide margin) and Hamilton (only beating his in ice time). Hamonic only slightly beats Brodie in shot generation and goals. On the Flames he is a number three defender who probably will be on the powerplay.
On the Flames he is a number 3 defender, but based on his numbers and comparing him to an archetype, it tells a different story. He has the offensive numbers of a number two defender, but the defensive numbers of a third pairing guy.

You are not wrong. Draisaitl does not score as many goals as Barkov, however Draisaitl pulls away in shot generation. Barkov however is more defensive, as he suppresses more shots when he is on the ice. That being the case, Barkov's lower shot generation could improve until then Draisaitl is the more complete player.

Mikkel Boedker
Here are Bodker's shooting percentages over the last five years
2016-17 8.2%
2015-16 18.2% With Colorado and 9.0 with Arizona. Overall 10.2%
2014-15 17.7%
2013-14 11.4
2012-13 8.4
Over his career he averages about 10.9%. Ideally is he had the same amount of shots this year as last (122) then he would produce only two more goals. There is a noticeable trend however if he is below 10 percent his numbers increase. in the 2012-13 season he only shot 8.4 the following season his S% shot up to 11.4 an increase of 3 points. The other thing he needs to do to have a rebound yea is just take more shots. he had a 40 shot on goal dip from the past two seasons. This suggest that if Boedker wants to improve his totals is to shoot more. With just 40 more shots he would have increased his goal total to 13.612.
Next Let's look at his Corsi. There were only two seasons where his Corsi rel last year was -1.4. In his career he averages about -1.6 so there could be some improvement. His individual Corsi was at 50.1 which is just above breaking even. His individual numbers suggest that he should be an offensive third line winger.
All in he is not going to have a big bounce back year, I expect his shooting percent to stabilize at his normal level and for his Corsi to drop back down. He'll need to take more shots and he will have to be started more in the offensive zone. Those are going to be the two main factors in any sort of comeback.

Elias Pettersson, future first liner?
To give you the actual math behind this we will use the two players which filled both criteria you listed the weight and league in Nylander and Pastrnak.
Petterson had a points per game (the best indicator of success in any league) of .95349 in his draft year.
In Nylander's draft year he posed a .72973 however he had spent time in the SHL that year. He followed that season by playing in the SHL and posting a .95238 before coming over to the AHL.
Pastrnak only played in the second tear league he had posted a .66667.
Here is why people might be saying he is a bust. It is a second tier league, meaning he is playing against softer competition. Unlike a Nylander he has not proven that he can preform at a higher league yet. He has preformed better than Pastrnak and Nylander at that level, but both of them came over to the AHL that year after and put up great numbers for their respective clubs. It is all about the track record and not the player. Right now there is a question if he can play at a higher level.
Lets look at other players drafted out of the same league who were also on the smaller side who have made NHL lineups.
Joakim Nordstrom (6'1 160)
Gustav Nyquist (5'10 169)
It all comes down to how he plays next year in the SHL or the AHL. It is just preferable to draft out of the SHL. You would assume that they are playing against better competition and are closer to making the jump to North America. Its where you find more consistently your Jakob Silverbergs, Alexander Wennbergs, Mika Zibanejads. And that is the big thing with drafting out of that league. On average the second tier league does not continuously produce top end, blue chip prospects out of the first round and a half.

Someone will pay him, but I doubt he will get anywhere close to the term he wants. Personally, I would only go three years max with him with a cap hit around 5 to 6 million (TJ Oshie like cap hit) that is about the average of what 50 points cost in the league. What I think will happen is he will to get what Oshie got as they put up similar numbers and age.
That being said, having money burns a whole in GM's pockets they can't spend it fast enough. I want to know what the first contract that is signed that is going to make us think, "Well another lockout is going to be fun." My bet, even with how bad he played in the playoffs, Kevin Shattenkirk is going to get some big dollars.
