Why not bc Joe Sakic is a good GM and he isnt trading Girard for Carey price...what an awful awful trade for the avs

Carey price is not an elite goalie anymore, he hasn't played a single second in over 8 months and he has one of the worst contracts in the league even retained at 50% its an over payment for his on ice results. Thats why

Not too mention one of the poorest teams in the league is spending approx. $25,000,000 for a 3rd round pick and a guy that was on waivers a month ago.

Think that's the bigger "Y not" in this scenario.

Sakic is a good GM, and unlikely has your same views on Price, lucky for you.

I missed that part, that makes it even worse. So Montreal gets out of Prices contract for free while getting Girard? This is a fantasy trade site but dear lord that is beyond unrealistic

If Arizona retains on Price, especially half retention will cost at the very least a 1st round pick and a 2nd round pick, and that would be the minimum required to get Arizona to even consider. The only way Chiarot gets a 1st is with half retention, and that would be generous. I personally don’t mind the other trades, but the ones I mentioned are your problems. Otherwise this is a good AGM.

He has one of the biggest analytical departments in the league, they fully know how bad price has been the past 4 years. Dont fool yourself.

Montreal fans have to finally admit the truth around him, price is a bottom half of the league starter with the worse contract while declining rapidly.

~$25M in retention - the only possible way would be if it's Mtl's 2022 1st (no protection) involved in the deal.

Keeping in mind this is a team that was struggling to pay rent earlier in the season.

Oilers say hell no. Not spending a 1st and a guy that we don't need to use as a cap dump in barrier (there are teams that would pay for barrier given his OFD and PP1 abilities and the fact he is a T4 RHD) for a backup and a nothing player

Agree. His injury history alone makes him a giant risk for a contender. MTL had to go out and pick up a solid 1B option because of that (and his play was declining), and that was 2 years ago.

If Covid didnt hit the league, montreal wouldnt have made the playoffs last season (would have been 9th in the East pt wise) or the year before they were 12th and got in the play in round.
Those are the points they bring up about Price still being a top goalie? Unable to actually back stop his team into the playoffs?

He has been a red flag for years and its wild that montreal fans keep on thinking Avs and their fans want Price.

I mean, all over the place here (and not in a good way), but a 3rd rounder for Arizona to retain somewhere around $18-20 mil is hilarrrrrrious.

This trade was horrible. Wideman is an NHL/AHL tweener and Allen is a back-up goalie. Not sure why the Oilers pay a 1st to trade a comparable goalie and a better defenseman.

Well, for one reason why not, Arizona is NOT retaining 20M+. And even they would, it would cost worlds more than a 3rd and Clague. That sort of retention would cost three 1sts easy, if not more.

What Colorado gives up: A decent starting goaltender who probably has a few years left in him, an excellent, young offensive defenseman who is signed on a long-term, team-friendly contract.

What Montreal gives up: A struggling goalie who hasn't played in 8 months and is going to be 35 before the end of the year, a bottom 6 forward who can come in handy occasionally.

Yeah, we don't want Price, and I've said it before, stop making these trades. Sakic will never trade for Price. I don't care about his last run to the finals, that was half a year ago.

I’d be willing to bet he does have the same views on Price. Sakic will not over pay for a goalie. He doesn’t take on long term contracts of old guys, a painful lesson he learned with Roy as the coach. Price is an old expensive goalie the trifecta of things Sakic doesn’t like. I would bet my mortgage payment Price never dons an Avs sweater, and @coga16 is totally right on this.

I get where you are coming from but nobody is paying 3 1st rd picks for salary retention. I’d love to see it though.

Yeah, we've already discussed Sakic's unwillingness to find a goalie solution, thanks.

My issue (aside from the cost of retaining is way off) is Montreal could afford the retention. We aren't competing during Prices current contract length.

Just my opinion. UFA Jack Campbell will the Avs goalie next season, and it won't cost them any assets to get him. Now can the Avs afford him. Just my opinion, Campbell will go to a good team for less money.

Umm, I get what you are saying, but I wouldn’t count MTL out of contending for the playoffs for the next half decade. MTL might be one of only a couple of teams that can complain more than COL about missed games, and there is some nice pieces there to build on, they aren’t a cup contender for sure but MTL front office was kidding themselves if they even remotely thought last year was repeatable.
