Would you rather see Nashville or Winnipeg make the playoffs?

Caps Postgame notes: 5-2 W vs Islanders

I got a chance to be in attendance for last nights game and while I don't normally post notes here, last night's game being a pivotal one for New York (and how they responded) warrants some I think.

- Firstly, It has nice to finally see an important game with playoff implications where the Caps actually showed up for once. Sorokin looked rough at the start and Washington actually was able to control the game well throughout the first 50 minutes of the game. Forcing the Isles to use their time out in the first minute of the game was something I never expected to see (and probably ruined any chances of an Isles comeback at the end of the game)

- Washington was once again completely undisciplined, with the Isles staying off of the penalty kill and Washington taking lazy holding calls throughout the game. Kuemper and the Caps PK was able to kill off penalties efficiently though, and the Isles never seemed to generate good opportunities on the PP.

-More importantly though, I was thoroughly confused by Lambert's decisions late into the game. Choosing to send out the Clutterbuck-Martin line, who had failed to generate any pressure the entirety of the game, with less than 10 minutes left in a must win game was perplexing. Passing up guys like Horvat, Nelson, and Engvall for a line that wasn't generating any pressure late into the game makes me feel a large amount of sympathy for Isles fans.

- Then, when New York finally gets some pressure and scores, they immediately fold and squander easy opportunities in front. Throughout the entire game when they got some momentum or pressure, they'd immediately lose it. The worst one came after moving within 2 goals, with a puck sitting in the crease with Kuemper unable to stop it... No Islander can get a stick on it and the puck is cleared away.

Overall, it didn't seem like there was truly ever any urgency from the Isles, playing like it was game 11 instead of game 81. If this is how they miss the playoffs (while I won't be surprised), I don't see how you bring back Lambert next year. Only time will tell, though.

Winnipeg. While Nashville has shown valiant effort in the absence and departure of key players, they are not a playoff team. How they have managed to stay in the race this long is beyond me. They should have been dead and over with at the all-star break. While Winnipeg teetered on the edge of one of the most monumental collapses in league history, they are still a good team. Far better than Nashville. They at least have a fighting chance at being competitive or winning a series against the conference champ. If Nashville was able to win at least 1 game in the first round, I would donate my kidney.

Preds are getting a new majority owner it seems

Nice new rich owner means more revenue if we look at recent history.

Now if we can just relocate the Coyotes to Houston and pass ownership to the rockets owner

Oh and can the mets owner take on a hockey team wink

I have no idea why he would go to the Hurricanes though. Odd decision on his part. Hes likely behind Pyotr Kochetkov on the depth chart right? Why not sign somewhere with a more desperate need at goalie.

andersen stays in CAR for a year or two, kochetkov backs him up
once andersen is gone, perets gets his shot backing kochetkov up
there's no one that can take his spot really, the guy with the best shot is zach sawchenko

Anyone who projected the Top3 of NHL D score in 2022-23 to be

1. Karlsson 100
2. Morrissey 75
3. Montour 73

Should be burned at the stake due to being suspected of witchcraft.

Ah yes I now remember how much ESPNs camera work sucks. Too busy running advertisements, stats and facial close ups to show the faceoffs lol. Love it

Fun fact: If Pyotr Kochetkov plays fewer than 7 games in the second half of the season he's still eligible for next year's Calder. It is still a distinct possibility as he's the only waiver-exempt Canes goaltender (on the NHL roster)

With Kochetkov not on the Canes' roster tonight, there is no possible way that he plays more than 25 games this season, and he played fewer than 6 games last season. This scenario has happened, and Pyotr Kochetkov is eligible for next year's Calder trophy.

I will laugh heartily if he (at 24) manages to beat Bedard for it next season

If you where a goalie wouldn’t you want to see the most rubber with no pressure on you because your team is garbage anyways. As a goalie myself I would go to Arizona. And and if you play well you will stand out

Owen Tippett gets his 25th Goal of the season, and 46th Point of the season.

As sad as it is for me, the Flyers got a very good return for Giroux as a rental.

2024 1st
Owen Tippett - Who has raised his value significantly and is probably worth near a 1st as of now
and a 3rd

For a
Very good rental
5th Rnd
and 2 draft busts

I mean, Andersen and Raanta aren’t staying in Carolina for long and the Canes have no one to replace them but Kochetkov, he’s all but guaranteed to tandem with Kochetkov in 2-ish years
