Swayman for Levi

Created by: alwaysnextyear
Team: 2023-24 Buffalo Sabres
Initial Creation Date: Jul. 13, 2023
Published: Jul. 13, 2023
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Does either team consider this? Both talented young goalies, but Swayman is more established and needs the raise right now while BOS is tight against the cap. I gave Swayman a mid-term deal that lines up with the end of Skinner's contract so that he can sign another big deal at 28. Meanwhile Levi's ELC lines up with the end of Ullmark's contract.

I think both teams will keep their guys. Maybe Buffalo can try and pry Ullmark to mentor Levi?

This isn't that bad of a proposal from an outsider point of view. They are really big on Levi though.

Will be interesting what swaymans numbers look like as a number 1 if he gets the opportunity, especially outside a stacked bruins squad. Levi is a little undersized, but other than that everything screaming a solid top 15 tender minimum with a bunch of team control. Still like the go buy hart from Philly depending on price, and build a bruins style approach until major payday, 2/3 years out.

This is a good concept in a vacuum, I think both teams should take this offer seriously. But at the end of the day, goalie swaps (especially young goalies with good upside) just aren't a thing and I think both teams would like to keep their guy.

In my opinion, I think both goalies will put up similar numbers throughout their careers so this trade is a wash anyways.

Levi was the primary return from the Reinhart trade.
Levi has dominated at every level he ever played.
There is no reason to believe that he will not do the same in the NHL.
Swayman has played for one of the best defensiive teams in the NHL, it is unlikely that he will perform as well for the Sabres.

I like the idea of adding a swayman type to join levi, sounds like it’s the other kid going forward luukkonen, wouldn’t mind a competitive upgrade there, but ya Levi’s job for sure. Don’t want to buy high on swayman, would rather attempt to buy medium or low on vladr/hart/ or any Adin hill type career path to strengthen room with a low cost. Couple years of a cheap levi, might as well use it.

Ullmark won’t accept a trade back to Buffalo is my guess so he’s out too

As a GM, you have to figure out if Levi's floor is higher than what Swayman has established. His ceiling may be higher, but Adams job might depend on how well the Sabres do this season. I am not saying it's the right move, but ultimately the Sabres need to be pushing for a playoff spot and Swayman has a safer floor than Levi (for this season). Long-term I'm with you, Levi looks like a stud.

You don’t trade levi period, I thought 13 overall was going to go for the best tandem partner that could be found with 3/4 years of team control or contract, plus dman, but went another way.

We know Levi can win NHL games. The issue comes from him still being a rookie and new to the league. Goalies progress slowly. Buffalo did a fine job getting better on the back end, but what happens when Levi can't handle the workload? Are you going to give the "harder" matchups to UPL? Comrie? Both of them suck. My whole point was to bring in a 1A to mentor Levi and ease him into the starting role, instead of just tossing him into the lions den expecting him to be elite.

It will be Buffalo's grave.

Also, Swayman won't perform as well with the Sabres, but you expect Levi to dominate? Buffalo should have gotten him a mentor, at least for this one season.

I figured he might considering Buffalo is ready to start battling for a playoff spot, but, you're probably right.

Really good idea for a trade concept. I applaud seeing something different that really makes people have to think and have good discussion. In the end I think both teams keep their guys.

Trying to stay objective a bit here: seems like an interesting idea, but feels way too risky for Buffalo considering how good Boston was defensively and how bad Buffalo was. Love the idea of Ullmark or Sway with Levi though, but seems like a longshot

I loved Levi in college, but I don’t t trade a goalie that has shown as much as Swayman for a prospect. If this deal would have happened before Bertuzzi signed, maybe. Now. I see zero point.

That said, it is more creative than most deals and in a vacuum, it is not bad

I don’t believe in Swayman at all. I think he is mostly the product of an elite defense in front of him, limiting the scoring chances and the quality of them. I will stick to the comparison that I made between him and Ray Emery. Both of them looked good in the regular season at times, but when the chips are down, they both crumble. In the end the best they could both be are good back up goaltenders, not someone you count on when it matters.

At best this is trading Andrew Raycroft for Tuukka Rask. That’s a trade Boston would love to make again. That’s also a trade that set back the Leafs for another decade. Buffalo can’t possibly afford to make that mistake.
