Couple of things about this

1. Does Brisebois realize you don't have to sign every guy to a 6+ year deal?

2. Do any Tampa fans like the deals for Hagel, Cirelli, or Cernak?

3. Does this mean Stamkos signs elsewhere next summer? If so, do you care as a Tampa fan? Or are you happy to pay Hagel and Cirelli instead?

We all said the sample size was too small for Tage to sign an 8 year deal and look at it today. Today's reality is that you have so many advanced stats and analytics that you don't need 4 years of sample size anymore, I think he's worth his deal with what he brings to the team that covers all of his prime years.

How long did Crosby, Malkin, Letang and MAF sign for?

Seems like a way to win to me. Take those shades off, penguin, and see that bargain deals are how you win the Cup.

Would have waited till maybe the TDL to extend as we dont know whats gonna happen (would he have another strong season or struggle)

But if he repeats what he did last season this is fine

This is not personal, just simple math, counting and questions

How many players have recent Cup winners and finalists have signed for 6+ years?

The cap goes up. Simple math. A contract signed today, to the right player, is a bargain in just a year or two.

It baffles me how people that frequent a salary cap site cannot grasp this.

Crosby, Malkin, Letang in their prime are nothing like the palyer profile Cirelli, Cernak or Hagel is... Im saying this as not a fan of either team...

My comment isn't really on tje skills of indivoduals.. More about bargaim shopping

I think i could even make the case that TBL made more with less

Both PIT and TBL have 3 Cups this century, both handed out long contracts to core pieces

If you don't do that, you are overpaying.

Simple as that.

There's definitely some risk with a deal of this magnitude, but Hagel blossomed into a top six winger for the Lightning last year and in doing so actually validated the hefty price Tampa Bay paid to get him. Factor in the fact that he'll be 26 when this deal begins, and I think this contract is a risk worth taking for a Lightning team that's still looking to compete and doesn't have much left in the way of future draft picks/prospects. Hagel's performance made him indispensable and part of the Lightning's young core with Point, Sergachev, Cirelli, and Cernak, and now he's been rewarded accordingly.

They have ~$12.5M to work with. Stamkos will take a discount let's say $5M and (2) of those players will be ELCs...lets say $1M to be conservative. That leaves $5.5M for 1 bottom 6 forward...easy to get and (2) Bottom pair Dmen...also easy to get. What you're talking about is very easy to do.

On the one hand, he just came off his best year ever and if he regresses, then this will be too much to pay for way too long.
On the other hand, he's young and if he just maintains last year's pace, he will be worth more than $6.5 million for nearly all of this contract.

Tampa Bay gave up a lot to get Hagel, this was obviously their intention all along. They can see the value in him, Hagel can play 1st or 2nd line minutes, and he can contribute. He doesn't have to the be star in Tampa and this probably suits him better, under the radar. The later years of this deal should provide great value for Tampa Bay.

Vote and comments obviously show people got no clue how good Hagel has been with Tampa.
He's no middle six winger, he's a top six winger, and we haven't even seen the best of him yet.

Awesome deal, extremely happy about this one.

Yep. Stamkos is the only big name UFA / RFA next season. They should be able to either sign him or replace him and get some depth forwards / defencemen with $12.5 million. The will be spending right to the cap and won't have a 23-man roster, but they will be able to do it.

Cup tax, I don’t want to be the GM that has to figure out what to with some of these contracts 5 years down the line but Tampa does have 2 cups, 3 finals appearance to show for it so I don’t think it matters

I think this is a not great deal, but not a terrible one. If he has another year producing as he has its fine in that regard. It is somewhat of a gamble given his sample size.

That being said I think what makes this deal stand out is that most/all of the other core pieces on this team seem to have taken a discount, I think many of us assumed related to the tax discount. It just makes it stand out for that reason. He's literally making more than Cirelli which seems crazy.

Probably not the best guy to bring up stats about. Thompson is an offensive beast and pretty bad at anything analytic. Super fun to watch and I'd love him on my team, don't get me wrong.
