dang. selfishly wanted an offersheet

anyways if Laf pops off they will have a lot of cap problems in a year or two, lots of guys due for pay raises and not a ton of people coming off the books. Feel like this is NY last shot with this core before they'll be forced to shake it up.

Damn cheap contract. Hopefully he can get a bigger payday when this contract is up. Ends all those trade proposals for him though that we all make haha

Locking up a generational talent for a $2.375 AAV is crazy business by Drury 🤯

A team absolutely should've tried the 4.3M one on like a 2-3 year deal, they would've had to (pay to) dump Goodrow somewhere then, and it'd still make their next few summers (more) uncomfortable. But you know how it is in the NHL!

This is cheap, even if he never hits 40 points.

Excellent contract for NYR for essentially a 40 point player last year. He’s definitely gonna improve from that greatly IMO. Great value and still RFA after it ends

The Rangers would have dumped a contract and matched. So it would have been pointless. Yes, it would hurt the Rangers, but we saw what happened to Montreal when they sent Aho an offer sheet that the Hurricanes would obviously match. They made an enemy, and it but them in the ass down the line.

There are also very few teams who have the cap space to pay him that and aren't also budget teams.

Earlier in the off season, I wonder if any teams approached him. The Rangers clearly had the Kakko extension as their comparable because they boxed themselves into a spot where this contract was the most they could offer.

I wouldn't necessarily say pointless... you're getting a team to move a valuable asset just to overpay one of their players and making their future tighter. I'm sure Washington or Philadelphia (if they acquired their 2nd) wouldn't have minded doing that to the Rangers. But Washington chose to spend money elsewhere, if it was gonna happen it would have been done earlier, and I'm also interested if anyone approached him.

I mean he got what he's currently worth. I think Kakko is with more based on his possession and defensive play, even if he's not producing

What I can't understand is why the Rangers can't move either Kreider or Panarin to their offwing so Laf can be more effective as a young player in the NHL in the top 6. Kreider especially should have no issues going to RW with the way he plays to his strengths. Kucherov and Rantanen are both lefty playing RW.

I like it. 2 more years to prove himself in a new system and if things don’t pan out, dump him.

well this is certainly better than another top-2 pick by NYR, based on point production per dollar of cap hit (based on the season prior to signing)
