We’re going to see a lot of Sam Girard trade next offseason

Definitely gave up on cap hit for an extra few years of term.

Nice piece of business for COL but I’ll be interested to see what his play looks like on the tail half of this contract.

Yeah, definitely would assume that this is front loaded. 10m the first 2 years and a lower salary when he is 35/36.

arguably the best contract in the NHL right now. Top 10-15 dman for under 8m? toss up between this and Hughes for me

Age was probably against him somewhat, but wow that's a steal at 7.5mil. One of the best all round players in the league. Just excellent at everything. Will be one of the best value deals for much of the length of the contract. Probably should be a 9mil guy

Think Hughes is still number one, but this is right up there with any long term deal in the league. Off the top of my head I'd probably put Hughes, Makar, Tkachuk and Stützle ahead because they're all so much younger, but I don't think there are many more long term deals that top this.

Edit: probably Fox too tbf

Anyone know why signing bonuses aren't being updated? Don't tell me the salary info is no longer free....

Try to forget about the fact that he'll be 37 when this deal expires. Fair AAV on a 4-5 year deal would've priced the Avs out of the market, hence the 7 years year term. Toews is certainly worth $9M+ AAV right now.

It ends when he's 36, so I'm a little worried about those final years. That said, overall, it's a good deal.

Cheaper and shorter than what he could have had on the market, so this is a win for the AVS.

NOW TRADE AWAY GIRARD FOR OFFENSE DEPTH ALREADY!

Or (outside chance) he's the LH version of Brent Burns. Not very likely, of course, but with a player as good as Toews is, there is always a chance that he could be an ageless wonder. Don't ever expect it, but with really good players you can't discount that possibility.

In that case it's an even greater steal!

Excellent contract for the Avs. Perhaps an underpay, but in the right neighborhood. Winner for the team and the player. .

fireable offense by the agent

You understand the agent works for the player? If the player doesn't like the deal he doesn't sign it. So Toews like Hedman, probably took less than market value to stay where he wanted to be. While leaving the team the ability to win another cup. You you don't get because unless you're 60 you don't remember Or haven't experienced them winning a Cup. But guys on teams that win Cups don't go after max money and still win Cups see Chicago's identical deals to Kane and Toews. Prior to those max deals 3 Cups after 0.

AAV a little bit rich for a #2... But keeping him is better than not so good deal

He's a #2 who is effectively a second #1.

Pretty good signing tbh. Its less than I thought but its also longer than I thought so its really good for the foreseeable future but there will be a time when this contract may start to be a burden. Unless of course he's like Brent Burns and still kicking butt at 38.

Wouldn't say that.
Definitely could have milked it for more, but if Toews' priority was just getting it done and willing to take a discount, its fine.

Except last year when that number 2 struggled to be the number 1 when the number 1 got suspended

Easily a top 15, maybe top 10 D in the league.

He's just not that... He can't carry his own blue line, something that each of the top 15 defensemen can do
