The fact that he turned down a deal that would make him the highest paid player in the league (AAV wise) to go to Toronto just goes to show how badly he wants to play there and win there. Good for him and the Leafs. Add one more solid defenseman and they’re right there with Tampa in the division race
Leafs win the lottery here. They are going to have no problem scoring goals. If they fix a suspect at times defence corps go ahead and plan the parade. Massive great news for Toronto. Traveres makes the team better.....period.
I don't think Toronto should have pursued Tavares like this. Way too much money for him. Matthews is going to take even more to keep, and you also have Nylander and Marner to sign as well.

Dude, look at the D core Pens have had for their cup runs w/ Crosby. It's been mediocre at best.
Toronto needed defense. Matthews/Kadri is already an Elite 1/2. I believe the money could've and should've went to the defense because now they have virtually no cap to improve the defense. Atleast JT will cover up the losses of JVR and Bozak
Alot of money for a guy that doesn't help you. Good luck to Toronto.
Yes an elite franchise centerman doesn't help us at all. Should have reserved the money for a true weakness at RHD and signed Sustr or Polak instead of one of the games best centers.

Ah yes, as we all know, signing a franchise center as a free agent doesn't help you. Also I would recommend you'd check out the defense cores the Pens have had for their cup runs in the Crosby-era.

Good point but if they get up against the cap, could they not trade for a small fortune in draft picks and prospects? Having too many elite players is a good problem to have IMO. Yep, a bit pricey but that's the UFA market.

Yea they included some solid defensemen who came clutch. And a Goalie who also knew how to be clutch when the time counted. The Leafs have neither

You do recognize that Dubas can simply move someone like Nylander for a RHD on their ELC? We also have young defensemen in Sandin and Liljegren coming.

Trade Nylander and all of a sudden your wings become very weak.

Oh yes, Freddy Andersen is a bad goalie as we all know. He only stole like 15 games for them in the reg season. And he of course allowed soft goals vs. Boston, totally not like Gardinder and Zaitsev turned into piles of **** with skates in that game 7, despite performing well in rest of the series. Oh and Jake Gardiner is such a bad dman too, what a bum, only scored 52 points. It's totally not like the Leafs have Rielly, who is probably one of the top-15 dmen in this league, Dermott and Liljegren coming up, oh no.

Regular season means nothing. Now you are paying a high cap hit and long term for Zaitsev. Offense wins games, Defense wins championships. You can't do anything when you have 1 really good defensemen and a bunch of bums around him.
