Crazy idea for the draft in June if it happens

Description
The NHL wants to hold the draft in June (that may not happen as per recent reports). One of the reasons they want to do this is for attention and money during this time with little to no sports. Why on earth then would they reduce the lottery and make it more predictable. Why would you not but all teams in the lottery (obviously with varying odds). I know they said but what if someone wins the lottery and then wins the cup. To me that could be a good thing attention wise a bunch of places would cover it and the NHL would get a bunch of press. This format they are talking about is under the assumption that they do end up playing again which is not guaranteed.

So here is my idea for a June draft
You do it all LIVE and ALL teams are in the lottery. So before the pick the lottery ball is picked (using same lottery ball idea in the Crosby draft) then the team is on the clock for 4 minutes. This would just continue for the entire first round. This would make things a lot more crazy and much watch TV

But Minny could win the 8th pick couldn't they? Typical 1st round trades are for a decent player, or move back 5 spots because they are confident the player(s) they want will still be on the board. That would be impossible in this scenario.

Unless a team is given 30+ min to mull their options, there is no way a team has a mid first fall in their laps, touch base with enough teams to gauge value, and possibly make a move.

In a typical year, teams have been having conversations for months on what they could get if they move their first round picks and trades are not that common, I really doubt a trade will be dreamt up within minutes of finding out what pick a team gets.

That could happen but you also would most likely have a bunch of teams calling Minny because they don’t know where they will pick and they may be really in love with a certain prospect in the draft and they don’t know where they will be picked. In most drafts teams have a good idea of what teams would pick what players based on where they are picking. It may not be current players being traded but picks and prospects.

@Jameshgfgn what do you think about a full 1st round lottery--every pick is a lottery. I thin that's a bit much...but here's what happened when I simmed it(one time BTW).
Pick 1: ARI (had 3 balls)
Pick 2: DET (had 3 balls)
Pick 3: MTL (had 2 balls)
Pick 4: VAN (had 3 balls)
Pick 5: ANA (had 1 ball)
Pick 6: TBL (had 1 ball)
Pick 7: PIT (had 1 ball)
Pick 8: NYI (had 1 ball)
Pick 9: WPG (had 1 ball)
Pick 10: DAL (had 1 ball)
Pick 11: BOS (had 1 ball)
Pick 12: MIN (had 1 ball)
Pick 13: OTT (had 2 balls)
Pick 14: NSH (had 1 ball)
Pick 15:EDM (had 2 balls)
Pick 16:
CHI (had 1 ball)
Pick 17:
CAR (had 1 ball)
Pick 18:
FLA (had 2 balls)
Pick 19:
COL (had 1 ball)
Pick 20:
VGK (had 1 ball)
Pick 21:
NJD (had 1 ball)
Pick 22:
CGY (had 1 ball)
Pick 23:
CBJ (had 1 ball)
Pick 24:
STL (had 1 ball)
Pick 25:
LAK (had 1 ball)
Pick 26:
NYR (had 1 ball)
Pick 27:
WSH (had 1 ball)
Pick 28:
PHI (had 1 ball)
Pick 29:
TOR (had 1 ball)
Pick 30:
BUF (had 2 balls)
Pick 31:
SJS (had 1 ball)

ok that was weird...

Yeah something like that but you could have it all electrical so it rolls threw all the teams then stays on the one that got the pick. This way the computer could remove the team after being selected so you don’t pick the same team multiple times

So TOR for example gives up a 2nd and Liljegren to get the 14th OV pick, then they win the 15th OV pick, and the trade they made was 100% unnecessary.

You can't have franchise altering decisions being made in 5 min windows cause it would make for good TV.

They would still have the 14th and 15th pick in that scenario. You also don’t know if the other team would have picked the player you want. Also why can’t you growth of the game is always more important that a single teams needs

OK, you win, it is your dream scenario.

I'm sure teams will make dozen of trades effecting their teams for the next 10+ years, not having a single clue of what's coming, as we all know trades are as easy in real life as they are in chel.

As a Pens fan, I would be thrilled to have a draft like that since our pick is lottery protected and it would be awesome to get a chance to draft Lafreniere or Byfield. Two franchise changing cornerstones.

Nah. The best team in the NHL doesn't deserve a top 25 pick, let alone a top 5 pick

I was thinking, if the Pens win the cup with Murray starting in goal, they can trade him for the 1st overall pick anyway.

For you people old enough to remember the TV show Dallas. They had a filmed a season without one of the main characters, (I believe he hadn't signed a contract)., so they him die. The season wasn't that satisfactory without him. So they signed him, and brought him back...but how do you bring back a dead character?
Well you make the previous season just a dream that his wife had.
I'm hoping to wait wake from Covid 19 and the bad worldly events.
I'm hoping the NHL doesn't play this season and has the draft/lottery based on the suspended end of season standings.

I feel like this is overcomplicating things too much. I think the easiest way to go about it is to have a normal lottery with the teams that don't get to the 24-team playoffs, as well as the teams that lose in the 1st round of this year's playoffs (the play-in round).

I also don't think the idea of doing the draft lottery at the same time makes sense since there's a lot of logistics that go into picks (for example teams only interview guys they think they'll be able to draft at the combine) and as lots of people on here are saying, trades are part of what makes the draft fun. Also from the NHL and TV provider's POV, the lottery is an opportunity for higher ratings. I doubt they'd want to merge that with the draft, another popular event.

I think that it definitely would be interesting although if a team like Boston or St.Louis got Lafreniere that would be crazy... I think maybe add in a max amount you can climb? Like can climb to #3 but not #1...although that could decrease the viewership. As a sabres fan it would suck to drop 3 places and like worst case have like Tampa...Boston...and Toronto the top 3 picks...

Didn't the NHL have some system like that in place? Bc in 2011 the Devils "won" the lottery but ended up picking 4th.

Also, the draft isn't happening in June. The NHL wants to finish this season and right now (based on what we know), we only have 7 teams that we can pencil in as lottery teams. The season isn't going to start until late June at the earliest IMO so there's no way the teams agree to a June draft.

But this doesn't really grow the game as much as it is a TV gimmick. This would affect all the teams in the league.

Lol no way. TBL gets #6 but SJS has #31? That's just unfair
