420 CHI MTL EDM 3 way blockbuster

Created by: Super_Randy
Team: 2022-23 Montreal Canadiens
Initial Creation Date: Aug. 22, 2022
Published: Aug. 23, 2022
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
The whole idea in the EDM/CHI/MTL trade is that MTL pays half the price of acquiring Kane plus gives a conditional 2025 1st to EDM to get Bouchard.
Free Agent Signings
RFAYEARSCAP HIT
1$800,000
3$2,250,000
Trades
1.
MTL
  1. Kane, Patrick ($2,750,000 retained)
Additional Details:
3 way trade for EDM to acquire Kane

EDM get:s

Kane at $3.875M plus extension 3 years x $5M
2025 1st (CGY) from MTL.

CHI gets:

2023 1st (EDM)
Xavier Bourgault
2023 1st (FLA) from MTL
2024 2nd (COL) from MTL

MTL gets:

$3.875M retention cap hit on Kane
Evan Bouchard
Warren Foeagle
CHI
  1. 2023 1st round pick (FLA)
  2. 2024 2nd round pick (COL)
Additional Details:
My thought process is that EDM may think of bringing in Kane to be a legitimate top line W for CM97, and hope that the loss of Bouchard is mitigated by signing Subban for 3 years. Bouchard is definitely a big loss but MTL does pay 2x 1st round picks, 1x 2nd round pick and retain on the Kane contract for EDM to make a cup run. Hell I'd even put Edmundson or Savard with retention in the deal going to EDM as well.
2.
EDM
  1. Kane, Patrick ($3,875,000 retained)
  2. 2025 1st round pick (CGY)
3.

ARI
  1. Drouin, Jonathan
Additional Details:
Not a cap dump move but MTL makes it to open a couple spots at FWD.
4.
MTL
  1. 2024 5th round pick (WPG)
WPG
  1. Armia, Joel
Additional Details:
Not a cap dump move but MTL makes it to open a couple spots at FWD.

What exactly have you guys done to get Bouchard here? Disproportionate value to expect a legit young top 4 defenseman to be moved just to clear a bit of cap

Edmonton declines easily. There’s no chance they trade Bouchard, and if they did in this scenario he would probably go to Chicago, not Montreal

Armia is an expensive 3 year cap dump. Montreal needs to add at least a first or two to dump him.

So let me get this straight. You want EDM to move out bouchard bourgault 23 1st and foegele for kane and a conditional 1st in 2025. Maybe add caufield and it would be a bit fairer.

Appreciate the creativity, but MTL giving up 2 late firsts and a late 2nd to get back Bouchard is not realistic for a small amount of retention (will be less then $2.75M as Kane will not be traded before the start of the season and the cap hit reduces with each game played). Edmonton meanwhile, can just deal Bouchard and a 1st plus Foegele to Chicago direct for Kane.

Furthermore, there is little to no chance Kane agrees to a $5M for 3 year extension (more likely $7M to $8M) and even less likely he agrees to an extension with any Canadian team.

Too many moving parts, and Edmonton is giving up way too much - their part of the deal is giving up Bouchard, Bourgault, Foegele, and a 2023 1st for Kane with basically an extra $1.4M in retention (his current salary is $10.5M, if Chicago fully retains he goes out at $5.25M, and you have Edmonton getting him at a $3.875M cap hit). It's a massive overpay for them. If a 3rd team gets involved in a Kane trade, I can only assume their job will just be absorbing the $2.625M hit of double retention and getting back a pick/prospect for their trouble.

dealing bouchard for kane would be a dumb move by edmonton, they easily lose that trade

feel like the third team being added in this deal to retain 3.8 mil for a year will get a 2nd and maybe a 5th or something with it and thats it, the rest makes very little sense. Edmonton has been starving for solid d for a while so i highly doubt they would move Bouchard and i dont think they would have to in a package for Kane.

Market value of $500k, but a cap hit of $3.4 million. What happened to Armia?

Pretty big no from Edmonton, retaining on a contract doesn't get that much especially one that is expiring and you are only retaining like 2.75 mil. You might be able to squeeze out a 2nd if you are lucky but not more than that.

Bouchard has more value than a Kane rental all by himself.

Man that's a tough one. I really liked him when he was in Winnipeg, but he's just fallen apart lately.

More silliness about Kane extending with Oilers at 5m X 3. Too think Drouin and Armia aren't cap dumps.....well

Says who? If the Oilers are a Kane away from winning a cup, that's not true then. Bouchard, while more valuable in the future, does not win them a cup this year. Owners generally speaking have one goal, that is to increase revenues (value) and winning a cup is the number one way to do that. That said, I doubt the Oilers are a kane away from winning a cup, but context matters when you say Kane is not worth Bouchard...that's not necessarily objectively true and subjective based on who you talk to.

In this case and looking at Edmonton's dcore, Bouchard is 100% more valuable than kane. This would be like NYI trading dobson for 1 year of kane, it would just never ever happen.

My bad, I was getting Bouchard confused with Broberg. You are right, Bouchard is more valuable to the Oilers, Broberg or Holloway not as much.

All good, Im not that crazy about a kane trade, depending on the price. But if its not far off from Chychrun's price then we mine aswell trade for him instead.

IMO Chychrun is overrated. He's a 2nd pairing defenseman who went on a shooting heater for 1 year when he only had to face weak southwestern teams.

I'd spend less to get a better player like Sanheim.

I don't think the Oilers needs are more offense so I agree with you.
