Team: 2022-23 New York Islanders
Initial Creation Date: Feb. 7, 2023
Published: Feb. 7, 2023
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
More info came out today that Vrana will not be back up in DET this year and they will move on from him in the summer via trade or buyout.

Trade Reasoning
DET - assuming this info is accurate and Detroit has given up on Vrana they flip him for a pretty much identical piece (this year and next at ~5m for a winger to play in Grand Rapids) and get a pick as well. Bailey also could be an interesting piece to swap for as he’s only owed 3.5 in actual cash next year and he’s also a vet leader in the locker room which could help a young GR team.
NYI - bc this 5m winger is playing at the NHL level in NY, the isles make an upside play here. They flip Bailey who’s not the answer for a player with more upside and who’s play style fits better next to 13/14. If Vrana doesn’t work out all we lost was a 3rd for an upside play. If he does work out we can capture a good player for little cost.

Dumping vrana maybe but taking on bailey seems like a no.

There is just zero reason for Detroit to "dump" Vrana, so the risk-reward balance for Detroit to ride it out far outweighs the cap when we have the space in the short term.

Conceptually there’s just no way for Detroit to justify this.

If Vrana returns to his former goal scoring form then why even trade him? We're certainly not taking Josh Bailey.

Very rarely do I trust rumors or "headlines", but if Yzerman just dumps or trades Vrana before he is back to running 100%, I will be pretty p*ssed off. He is already starting to look again like the guy he traded for.

If anyone should be replaced for now on D, it should be Romanov. By far the isles worst defenseman.

I highly doubt Yzerman will move him for anything less than a positive return, let alone dump him... he took a calculated risk with the waiver at the time and it looks like it's paying off. Vrana was given an opprtunity to get his game back (in a lower pressure situation), get his personal stuff sorted, and the Wings can continue to evaluate him with no risk. Worst case scenario, we go into next season and eat the final year of the deal(we have the cap space). Best case scenario, he returns to form and we add a 40-goal caliber scorer back to the lineup. There is literally nothing positive to be gained by the Wings dumping him, or selling low.

anytime anyone proposes a Vrana trade you pop in with these frankly ridiculous "counters" - like, I get valuing a guy as a potential bounce-back and not wanting to sell low, but you *do* realize that Vrana is currently damaged goods on the trade market, right?

No, but not for reasons you'd think. I believe Vrana has been sent to Coventry. So taking on a has been and dealing Vrana to a potential contender kind of rewards him and insults the club and the locker room for the sacrifices they've made for him.

If GR leadership were a genuine issue, Detroit could have easily kept Frans Neilsen or Abdelkader around. This just doesn't feel like an Yzerman move to me. Reading between the lines here, he won't be dealt at the TDL unless someone really pays.

He’s getting bought out anyway if Detroit can’t move him. It’s ridiculous to act like he has positive value. If anything Detroit would have to add because Bailey has a lower buyout cost than Vrana.

And we have him for another year and no reason to sell him for a useless player like bailey. So until people give something resonable and not a cap dump, there will be continued posts to prove that Point. Josh bailey shouldn't even be in the nhl anymore and he makes 5M+ and eats a roster spot for a young kid or better player. I rather dump him to Arizona and let them reclamation him for nothing then take back albatross bailey who holds less value then ahl vrana

Holy hell, is that a lot to give up for one year of Gostisbehere.

Also, the whole point of Detroit moving on from Vrana is to shed cap, why would they take Bailey back in that deal?

HAHAHAHAH you're kidding right?? Nobody claimed him off the waivers for free. Vrana will go for little to nothing if not he's a salary camp dump... Also there's a report he might get bought out. Fans of their own team are so cluesless... YOURE NOT GETTING ANYTHING FOR VRANA. The fact they get a 3rd round pick in this instance is probably enough even considering taking Bailey (who has a smaller cap hit than vrana)

There was a report he may get bought out... Vrana has little to absolutely no value especially coming in at $5.25 mil per year... sorry wings fans you guys got completely pick pocketed trading Mantha for him... Now it's time to realize he's worth nothing and move on.

Theres more to the story then what you are saying, but you wouldn't know that as a fair weathered fan. Bailey is worth less then vrana in the ahl, it's how bad he is

"LOL" is what I'm saying that you traded the second biggest trade chip on your team for a player who's played less than 40 games in 3 years for your organization and was passed up by all other 31 teams in waivers.

Now that I'm thinking about it you make a really really good point... If nobody claimed the player for free on waivers , they must really want to trade assets to get him!! GOOD POINT MAN!!!

Bailey you can easily buy out just like Vrana will likely have to be. (in fact bailey's contract is better to be bought out) Also, if nobody claimed him on waivers this season (not even a team at the bottom of the standings that could've just held him for the year and traded him this offseason if he was actually worth anything) why would anybody trade real assets for him?? You guys are just biased into thinking he's worth anything. He has little to no value if not negative value.

Nah, we will get a similar contract for him, kapanen/Boeser which is better then bailey

Dude he’s getting bought out… bailey has a lower buyout cost if u want to save money. Not saying u should give up something to swap the two, but financially speaking it’s easier to get rid of bailey…..

You know, being dangerously misinformed is one thing, but making it so blatantly obvious isn't usually the best move....
