To give teams an outlet to remove contracts, he uses the Coyotes to absorb contracts which prevent actual teams from being competitive.
To influence the market, he has the Coyotes set the prices for transactions. How much it costs to dump cap, how much a rental player is worth, how much a good player should garner, etc.

Trying to bring the market back to a semblance of sanity, is the only explanation for Arizona selling off one of the most coveted available players in the league for essentially half price.
It's a splash of cold water on a fire that spread too quickly. He's using this trade to tell teams they went way overboard and need to re-evaluate for the remainder of the deadline and off-season when it comes to player values.


If true, I wonder if all the gms know this, speak about it openly, or all the gms know this but never speak of it, or all the gms have theories but aren’t sure, or all the gms have no clue?

Is a very solid theory.

To add, it’s very good for the short, medium, and long term health of the league for the ownership group, which is what bettman is, to have this much insight. Is like self policing, pressure relief, a place to put misfits, stash franchise breaking contracts, audition new coach and gm talent, etc.

It can also provide for back room dealings - which may be needed to protect the integrity of the league as well as give a bunch of rich dudes the ability to do things they otherwise couldn’t, however, there are aspects of this I could see the NHLPA absolutely rejecting outright.
