Solid extension that is friendly for both the player and the team. With the cap rising this is nice value for a 2C with a very strong two way game.

Kopitar is still good an all but I struggle to understand why LA would give out a 35+ contract a year in advance. **** happens and there is no upside for them to do this. It's not like Kopitar is ever going to leave or won't let you sign him around the deadline or offseason

Hoping it would have come in lower, but also hard to complain about giving him 7 with everything he brings.

Hopefully there can be another cup in that extension!

Not front-loaded, so none of the usual 35+ contract drawbacks apply.

Good signing.

Cap certainty. Now they know exactly how much money to allocate for next season and can spend accordingly.

This really isn't that important - especially at this price tag. He wasn't going to command more and now you're locked in no matter what. Just poor risk analysis

Somehow I'm not surprised that you don't understand the concept of guaranteed contracts.
Locking it in for a player like Kopitar is not a good thing like it would be for a McDavid or Matthews given his age

If he's injured, he goes on LTIR. If he's bad, the Kings can buy him out. If he retires, the cap hit goes away.

Not sure what the problem is.

Yeah, you really don't get it.

35+ deals do not ever go away. Can't even buy them out

In the return to play MOU signed in 2020, the league did away with the 35+ drawbacks for multi-year contracts that are not front loaded.

Maybe you should "get it" before you start throwing shade.

Think teams are still unsure what the cap rise will be. I could see Kopitar having another strong season, seeing a large cap jump, then demanding even more than this. His injury history isn't decorated enough to have as deep of a risk analysis role as some other older players.
Regardless, the "overpay" is minimal. Kopitar should be at worst a mid tier 2C for the first year of that contract, which is around standard for a 7m player now.

Fair deal imo, if he can keep up his production with the defensive impact he's always had this is pretty solid

35+ Year Old Rule for Cap Counting
CBA §50.5(d)(i)(B)(5) shall have no application to a multi-year SPC that has: (1) total compensation (Player Salary and Bonuses) that is either the same as or increases from one League Year to the immediately subsequent League Year, and (2) a Signing Bonus, if any, that is payable in the first year of the SPC only.

So yes, the Kings can buy out Kopitar's contract just like any other contract and get the full cap relief that any other contract would.

Structure wasn't in when I was posting. Not sure if what I'm seeing now is final but it wasn't eligible initially,
Regardless - the options available are still bad for no reason. They easily could have waited. There was zero chance of this contract being higher than budgeted
