Seen this coming. Grier likes those comeback stories. Tried it last season with Kunin, Lindblom signings

His average points per 82 games is just under 30 so far in his career. If he matches that this year, then he will earn himself a raise next year.

Really like these types of signings. I think Zadina still has something still, he'll get a chance to play good minutes with San Jose, and if it doesn't happen San Jose loses nothing. Good signing!

Very good bet for Grier, and almost certainly spells a few trades coming (we have like 32 wingers).

One of those guys who I really hope catches a break. There were times where he was the hardest working player with his speed and forechecking. If he would have found twine more often, who's know what he could have been with confidence. Best of luck in SJ

Why did no one else tried to get him on waivers? Amazing for the sharks to get him for that cheap and keep his RFA rights after the season.

He was owed almost 5M in real dollars for his last contract. Now it's only costing SJ 1.1M.

Probably one of the best off season signings yet. Playing on SJ who's a team that isn't so strong offensively gives Zadina a lot more chances. Anyone who says this signing is bad is wrong

It's worth a shot. He was a highly rated prospect at one time and he's only 23, so maybe a change of scenery will bring out some of whatever it was he showed when he was 18.

What I don't understand is how he got here. CapFriendly says his contract was terminated by Detroit. Obviously that made him a UFA, but how can a team terminate a guy's contract without buying him out? The last time I remember a team terminating a contract was when Evander Kane faked a covid test or something like that, which I assume violated something in the contract terms which allowed the team to walk away from it. Does anybody know under what conditions a team can terminate a player's contract? What did Zadina do to get his contract terminated without Detroit having to buy out the remaining two years? (I know it was past the buyout window, but I thought that meant they were stuck with him until the next buyout window if nobody else wanted to take on his contract.)

2 totally different players; not at all alike. I mean, not even the same position.

I could see Zadina breaking out if he gets a chance to play with Hertl.

A player and team can mutually agree to terminate their contract at any time. In this case, Zadina didn't want to play in the AHL, so he asked to terminate, and the Red Wings assented.

Thank you for explaining that. I can see why it doesn’t happen very often. Zadina’s old contract was back-loaded and required the team to pay him his full NHL salary in the AHL, so he gave up a ton of money. That’s really betting on yourself. Or maybe he’s the kind of person who doesn’t feel right taking somebody’s money if he’s not earning it. In any case, he should be heavily motivated to turn his game around in San Jose so he can make up for it on his next contract.

Motivation is one thing. I don't think his skill-set is NHL caliber above a 4th and marginal 3rd line player however.

Hope he finds his footing. Should get a good opportunity in San Jose, could be a good trigger man for Eklund
