In a vacuum, this is a fair deal. A 1st and a 3rd for the second best forward available (after Lindholm) would be good during most trade deadlines. However, Montreal was paid a 1st to take him and then signed him to a reasonable contract and then traded him away for another first and a third. Yeah, they WIN the overall transaction, even though Winnipeg are not the losers here. Calgary is certainly the loser here.
Wait... Monahan is the 2nd best forward available? That's quite the Olympic stretch.
Depends on your definition of availability, since anyone is technically available, but among the UFA class on seller teams, he’s certainly up there.
Certainly up there, but not 2nd best.

Highest p/g among rental centers last I checked.
That doesn't account for the entire market, but it does cover the "available" aspect.
He didn't say rental centers, he said forwards. The highest PPG forward among seemingly available UFAs (if we want to insist only UFAs can be available) is Tarasenko. But points aren't everything anyway.
But hey, I'm fine with the overpay because Winnipeg did it. I hope all our rivals mortgage their futures.
Fair deal on both sides imo. Jets have Montreals 2nd from the PLD trade anyway so we are probably gonna only slide 10-15 picks outside of the first. Excellent asset management from both sides. Jets don’t need a first this year with how well we have drafted. Would rather pay this price than what the Canucks paid for a dude who hasn’t scored a goal in almost half the season.
