Team: 2020-21 Toronto Maple Leafs
Initial Creation Date: Dec. 7, 2019
Published: Dec. 7, 2019
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Switch to tandem goaltending with Markstrom and Korpisalo.

Columbus gives Jones for superior goalie which they should have no issue paying.

Oilers add a top6 FW who likely hits 30 goals playing with McDavid/Draisaitl.

If Hamonic opts stay out west, backup plan is Sami Vatanen @ 5.5 million for 5 years.

I admire out of the box thinking. Usually, of course, such thinking results in an abomination for one side or the other or both. But this one is pretty good. I can't see Toronto even hesitating on this offer, for the reasons highlighted by our colleagues @oneX and @Jamiepo . Only risk is that Jones walks in 2022, which is an acceptable risk. As @Jamiepo hints, the risk to Columbus (i.e., their reason for rejecting) is the replay of the free-agent desertions this past summer -- namely, that Freddie wouldn't re-up there. Maybe there should be some conditional pick to protect partially against that possibility.

Nice effort! Nicer nerve!!

Okay, do you have a plan to sign Andersen to a new deal?
That is where this idea originated from.

I think we should let him walk when his contract ends and have a stopgap goalie in place until Woll is ready. Either markstrom or Crawford seem likely this offseason and there are a few options that seem somewhat unlikely (Greubaur) next off season. Maybe Raanta if you want to wait until his deal is actually up. He is really good and ari has another starter

What about the idea of switching from one goalie to a tandem? @Trickster makes a good point about Leafs being priced out at signing Andersen for more term.

If you think the Leafs can't sign him later, why not move him in the off-season to change the goaltending?

Because Freddy is a top 5 good and you should hold onto them as long as possible when contending

I do like this and the idea of having 2 relatively good goalies instead of 1 good and one bad, kind of like what Carolina has. I would do this trade if we could get someone better then josh Anderson or if they were to make another trade for a winger to play with JT.

Who things I would change are the dermott contract and that you forgot puljujarvi. Puljujarvi has preformed well in blue and white before so he will surely do will in TO. I think dermott will sign a long term deal worth around 4, look at what sam girard got except girard puts up points and plays lots of minutes. Dermott does neither, I am really high on him but he doesnt do the two things that defenseman get paid for.

If they could use that extra capspace and sign say kreider or make a trade for zucker so they could run a kreider/Zucker-tavares-hyman/Anderson 2nd line and have a 3rd line of mikheyev-kerfoot-kappy/puljujarvi I would be very happy.

I know I've been acting like a kid loaded up on sugar (BTW have I mentioned yet that Seth Jones is my favourite player?) but in all seriousness, our goalies wouldn't have to stop as many shots with Jones playing 25mins in front of them. And IMO Jones and Rilley would be the best pairing in the league.

Short answer? Yes.
It's not that I don't like Andersen but he will be getting an insane raise...pricing the Leafs out.
It's forward thinking imo.

Also signing goalies long term isnt a good idea

I think it’s the best attempt I’ve seen at getting jones to Toronto, by far. Well done.

There’s something inherently wrong with saying, “until Woll is ready.” Goalie’s are crap shoots. He looked solid at BC, but realistically, what are the chances he’s a legit NHL starter? 20%? That’s probably high.

What you think of Hamonic vs Vatanen?

I considered Schultz as well.

Anytime, this is the best ACGM you've done and I've seen on here (not even joking).

Hamonic all day and I don't know enough about how Schultz is doing this season to give an opinion.

Crawford looks about done to me
Not having a good year, not even a little.

Grubauer could be interesting, but more than a year away.

Raanta, not interested.
Do not believe in him, wod rather have Kuemper.

I think CBJ is going to decline this. The thought is something certainly new and different and I kinda like it, but the biggest problem for CBJ in this move is that they're not a contender, and most likely not going to be a contender for the several years to come. This is where Andersen's age makes an issue. Assuming that he re-signs with the Jackets, he's turning 32 that year. Now assuming more that the team might reach a contending status in just about 5 years...Andersen might is well out of his prime, and maybe declining. At that point also Marner has long moved from Columbus, making a Panarin in a sense. The value is good, but the team you're trading the assets is just wrong...

Also Holland is never going to pay that much for a mid-6 winger. That's a big-time overpayment.

What you think Markstrom and Korpisalo as goalie tandem?

I think they would thrive on this team but I'd like to see what it would cost to sign Lehner or trade Korpisalo for Murray. Dubas wanted him as part of the Kessel trade bit Rutherford told him no. And I would assume he's made available before Jarry but I prefer Jarry. Or even Georgiev maybe? If that is our team and tandem I'm good with it ?

Lehner is gonna get paid IMO.

Murray, will get paid quite a bit with 2 Stanley cups and his health is concern too. Looks like he is losing his starting job, dont think hes good either.

Just an fyi....he was scared of posting this ACGM but I kept encouraging him to post it. It's an interesting take on a few players in this trade.

Too bad there hasn't been any CBJ fans coming in here....but they would probably want more....lol

Absolutely, there's talk from a "rival GM" (media-driven) that they expect him to land $25-30mill in the off-season. I think it's all smoke and mirrors to try and drive up his price, but yeah, I'd pay him that...he's worth every penny IMO. Would you?
