If Letang Rumours Are True

Created by: AnalyticsGeek

Description
I for one, don't believe Letang is getting traded. The media doesn't seem to like him cuz he is short with them and have occasionally tried running him out of town, but he's always stayed. I am just making an armchair team IF the Penguins are indeed shopping him. Letang is still an elite number 1 defenceman and will be for the next few seasons, so his value needs to be very high.

Extremely unrealistic team but how do you guys think they look on paper? Are they good enough to win the cup?

Don’t think Marner for Letang would go well for Toronto. If Letang was 26-30 it would be good.

Letang is a little bit too old, especially if we're giving up a guy who's not even in his prime yet.

Not a fan of that 3rd line -- I don't think those players would mesh together well. Having said that, yes, this is a good team.

Yeah, it’s true Letang’s an older D, but he hasn’t showed any signs of slowing down. This playoffs, he was terrific playing a shutdown role, which is what Toronto needs. He’s one of the most well conditioned athletes in the game. I expect him to maintain this level for another 3 years at least.

That's understandable, but at that age, any serious injury could end his career. And I'd take 5 more years + any likely extension of marner over 3 good seasons of Letang.

There are cheaper options that can get the job done without giving up on potential franchise level talent.

okay, lets settle down with the brash comments. do i think leafs make this trade? No, they dont due to age difference, but for the immediate future does this improve the Leafs team. Yes it does. It wont happen because Letang is nearly 10 years older than Marner, but dont act like this is another trade where a team is giving up spare parts for Marner because that is just not true. if Letang and Marner were the same age, Pens would have no interest in this trade anyways

I don’t think he will be at his current level very long at all. My guess is in 2 years he will start to decline. While I would not mind seeing the Leafs get him, not at the price of a retained Marner. Maybe Marner for Letang and a Kapanen back (wouldn’t that be ironic).

No gm in the right mind trades a 23 year old forward for a 33 year old defence man (both of them worth the same in their prime). Only if you can go back in time and get the Letang from 10 years ago do we even think about it.

I agreed with you saying leafs dont do it? and no... in their prime, letang, a RHD is worth more than Marner, a RWer. Even if Letang was say 26 or 27, Leafs would still jump all over it. But of course hes not, so thats why the trade doesnt happen. but like i said, this isnt a trade where pens fans are giving up "nothing" for Marner like he usually posts.

I disagree with that philosophy. Assuming they both kill penalties, play PP1, and play top line/top pair, I'm taking the same-aged defenseman over the winger every time. Heiskanen over Svechnikov. Ekblad over Nylander. I think you'd have to be talking about a no.1 center to get on the same playing field as a no. 1 d-man.

I always like to say that crosby and malkin always give you a chance to win a cup. So yes, this team absolutely could do it.
