Rebuild Time

Created by: Isic153
Team: 2021-22 Montreal Canadiens
Initial Creation Date: Feb. 5, 2022
Published: Feb. 5, 2022
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
It's time for a rebuild in MTL. We should keep some core pieces around like Suzuki, Caufield and Romanov. We should keep some players who are a core part of the identity of the team like Price and Gallagher. We needed to keep some current players because their contracts were untradable (Anderson, Armia Byron,). And I kept some players because I think they are good mentors for the young guys (Toffoli, Edmunson).

The rest were traded for a combination of picks, prospects and NHL ready young players to teams that actually need the players and could actually trade for them.

The offense looks pretty good with more prospects on the way (see the non-roster player and reserve lists). The defense however does not look great and will need a lot of time to develop the young players on the roster and in the system. In net, hopefully Price can mentor Primeau into the starter for this up and coming team.

Let me know what you think of my moves

Artturi Lehkonen is not Blake Coleman.

He's not signed to a below $2M deal for two years.

He hasn't scored 21 goals in one of the weakest teams in the league before getting traded. He's managed one third of that

He's not able to play center unlike Coleman was.

What similarities do these guys even have?

NSH, COL, EDM and LA decline too. None of these players they're getting warrant top prospects and a pick in return.

Well at least there isnt a terrible price trade in there, but anyway, every not montreal team says no. None of the habs players are worth that at all

Drouin ain’t getting a first. Especially with zero retention.

I’d be surprised if Lek got another substantial piece ontop of a first. Since Coleman was on contract for 2 years at 1.8. Hence the rational for the high end piece point. While he’s cheap this year and an rfa, it may be difficult to keep his number down, which would also deter from the value he holds.

Boston absolutely needs a 2nd line center. Problem is Dvorak is a 3rd line center. They already have a bunch of them.

Value aside, NSH doesn't need defense and L'Heureux isn't available for anyone on MTL's roster.

I don’t care what the others say, BOS accepts, I know everyone else is going to cry and say he’s not a 2C but his face off numbers are great and is an upgrade over haula or coyle, make the trade and if it doesn’t work this year move him to 3C and trade coyle in off season

And Kravstov isn't Nolan Foote. He is a locker room disaster who requested a trade out of New York. Plus Lehkonen is significantly younger, is an RFA and is one of the best penalty killers in the league

He's better than Coyle and Haula. He scored 18 goals last year in Arizona. He's been bad in MTL because everyone has been bad in MTL mostly due to coaching IMO

Fair. The reason I chose the Preds is because they are one of the only teams in a playoff spot with the cap space to make it work

Boston might say Yes for the reasons set forth by @Snowball, but every other team says No because you've seriously overvalued the Montreal players and, in some instances, ignored the other teams' needs. With particular reference to Los Angeles, we're not paying a first for a rental and probably won't pay a second for one because we don't believe in rentals in general.

Lehkonen is barely two years younger than Coleman was when he was traded. At 26 and 28 the age doesn't matter squat, they're basically at the same state of their career. Lehkonen being RFA is a plus, but not a massive one as his QO is still more expensive than Coleman's second year was, and a minority of contenders can afford paying $2,5M for bottom-6 players.

I'm not disputing Lehkonen's a good defensive asset, but he lacks the offensive prowess that would make him a top-6, or even a mid-6 asset worthy of a prospect+1st round pick. No contender would be able to pay that much for a 4th liner, which he'd most likely end up being in one of the teams with the strongest wingers in the entire league.

Plus if Kravtsov were as bad as you think he is, why would you even target the guy?

I think Lehkonen has extra value because he is a proven playoff performer after the cup finals run last season where he played an important role on MTL's shutdown line with Danault and Gallageher where he was playing almost 20 minutes a night (not 4th line minutes). Plus the fact that he will be under team control after this season should increase his value. I think you may also be valuing Kravstov higher than me. His value has dropped significantly IMO because of the trade request and the rumored locker room problems he creates. His skill on the ice is why MTL would still want him.

Your D prospect pool is pretty deep already so I figured he was a good target for MTL.
Plus I like the idea of reuniting Drouin and McKinnon (even if they most likely won't play on the same line)

But he’s not a 2C. He’s a 3C. So with this trade instead of the bruins having two 3Cs, they have three. No bueno.

Lehkonen isn’t close to the asset Coleman was.

I'm not really a fan of Kravtsov's either, I don't see much potential in him, and his attitude makes him look like another Lias Andersson to me. He's just, well, meh.

I'm also a not a huge fan of spending massively to depth assets. Lehkonen, despite the fact that I like his game quite much (and just like me he's a Finn too), he's just exactly that. A depth asset. I just don't see depth assets warranting first rounders. Going through all trades involving first round picks in this decade, besides Tampa no one has moved first rounders for what was perceived as bottom-6 depth (or bottom-4 D-men). Tampa's dynasty is a such a special case in today's hockey, they're good enough to move higher picks to fill a specific need.

If Lehkonen is perceived to be worth more than, say a 2nd round pick and a meh prospect (like the usual depth players), MTL should just keep him. He's likely going to be worth more for you than anything you receive in a trade for him.

That's how I'm looking at it. Until he started showing up in trade rumours with insiders saying that he could get us a 1st round pick, he was on my "players to keep list". I totally agree with you. I wouldn't want my team to spend a first round pick for a bottom 6 guy either but I wouldn't trade my guy for less...

Hopefully Kent Hughes has the same thought process

Again, this just doesnt work. Forget that boston and Montreal just don’t make trades, lets take a look into the two options presented here:
1. Spend assets, and lock up 4.5M of cap space for four years for a guy that just is not what you need at that position, though may be a very minor upgrade (a significant argument can be made that coyle is better)
2. Keep the assets, keep them cap space, and get someone that’s actually fits what you need.

Let’s pretend for a minute that the Avs are interested Drouin. Drouin doesn’t even fetch a 1st rd pick much less a first + a very good d prospect. Whatever y’all are smoking in MTL they need that strain in COL.

He’s averaged .48 ppg for his career. Coyle .48. Haula .42

His best season .55. 3rd line production.

He had 18g last year. Cool. Coyle is on pace for 20. Haula had 29 a few years back and has been averaging .8 ppg at C2.

They are all 3rd liners. Don’t need another one.

Not completely against adding him. But don’t call him a 2nd line center or an upgrade. He isn’t. His ceiling is higher, but until he hits it….

BTW. Debrusk .53…with a terrible season last year.

If struggling, overpaid RHD and backup goalies have that much value the Canucks will trade you Myers as a Petry replacement for Mysak and a 1st and also Halak for Romanov

No I wouldn’t do it for that either. Do not want drouin at all, he doesn’t fit on the avs, his lack of consistency and effort, he’s not a good fit and don’t care about how he was mackinnon junior teammate 9 years ago,
