As much as I like the player, his stats are dependent on playing with either Crosby or Malkin, and at 30 yrs old now- a 6 year deal seems like far too long. If they lose Malkin or Letang (and cant replace them with similar talent) theyre not competing for a cup...and that deal will look like a waste of resources, regardless its unlikely to look like a good contract in 3 or 4 years. So the Pens are handcuffing themselves with 3 years of wasting his talent and their own money- followed by 3 years of an ugly contract...all so they can squeak into the playoffs.
