He’s got something else cooking. He didn’t clear the cap hit of Sandin and Engvall just to activate Murray. There’s one more piece coming.

With Sandin gone, thats good news for Mete, who has a chance at 3rd LD next season, bad news for Leaf fans, having 2 LD Rielly and McCabe who have past their peek and are entering their downward career spiral and Gio who is past his expiry date.

MacLellan-sama, I kneel...

In all seriousness I said fair deal. Leafs get a body and a pick to flip, which they seem to have just done. It was, more than likely, going to be a 32nd overall anyway so not much sleep being lost over that.

Caps get a promising young defender who is under team control going into next season on a nice deal and an RFA afterwards. Also interestingly, similar measurables to Orlov, makes ya think.

Also for far less than the reported asking price of Chychrun, with Sandin being younger and cheaper.

Edit: they used a 3rd on Schenn, not the 1st seems. I really need to learn to read. Still, means they will probably still flip it.

Huge L by Dubas in this trade. One thing I will say though was that Sandin was probably getting moved regardless in the offseason now that McCabe is on this team

How is this a loss? He traded away a player that had fallen off the depth chart and got back an asset and a very likely very late 1st round pick.

If that 1st Rd pick isn't traded away, I think it's Dubas back up plan for if ROR does the same as Foligno and not take a team discount and leaves.

Dubas got lucky the Gio did the Leafs a team discount to stick around.

It's a coin toss on ROR, try for 1 more $5+ million AAV contract to bank his retirement or go for glory and take a team discount to become a legend in Toronto.

I think it's a win-win. Sandin *should* settle into a nice top four role, and the Leafs get a guy to play the same role this year and the first to make more moves.

Writing was on the wall I think this past week. McCabe coming in for multiple years seriously limits Sandin's upward mobility on the team and it was smarter to cash out now to help the team immediately instead of letting him become Dermott and sending him off for a third to Bingoworld or whatever.

Return is pretty ehhhh though. Gustafsson just become the best offensive defenseman on the team but he's a UFA and the pick is at the tail end of the first.

I kinda like it for both teams. WSH gets a solid young D for their roster, TOR capitalizes on the value of a young D that was a bit sheltered in their lineup.

Probably a win-win.

Yep as now with the first Dubas can do Dubas magic at the draft turn the low 1st into 2 2nds then basically draft a bunch of steals

As Knies, Robertson, Minten, Hirvonen, etc all 2nd rounders

Do people really think Gus is a the type of player TOR needs? He is horrendous defensively. They definitely got worse with after this trade.

I'd be surprised if he's even playing...their D core is stacked. He's like 8th in their depth chart.

I hate this deal for Toronto. The upside for Sandin is huge; he was close with Liljegren (is he also on the chopping block now?); the pick is #32...all for a player whose claim to fame is being a passener on Montreal's run to the finals in 2021...Dubas seriously...

Depth as rn Leafs have

Rielly, Gus, Timmins: Offensive specialists

McCabe, Schenn, Brodie, Holl: Defensive specialists

Gio, Liligren: 2-Way D

Very healthy mix

Like Boston just rotate D in and out and in playoffs injuries sadly happen

So he will get some games

I got 0 complaints rn

Why does Gustafsson have so many points ????

My man's on pace for 52 points while making 800k.

Seems like a slight upgrade on Sandin for the playoffs.

Plus a 1st round pick .... I'll take the win on this one.
