That right side is getting a little crowded in Columbus.

Contract probably doesn't age too well, but good for Severson.

What a great extension! Surely severson won’t be moved after signing for so long… right…?

Boqvist/Peeke trade incoming. Gudbranson buy-out?

The term is the obvious issue, but the cap hit…actually ain’t half bad. Particularly once we consider how the cap is expecting huge jumps in the next few years.

He can play top-pair with Z and/or give Jiricek some shelter as he develops.

Even then, this reeks of “I need to get good immediately and I’m probably not here for the end of this contract anyway” type move from Jarmo.

Gonna be the number 2 RHD on Columbus for the rest of his career.

Behind Gudbranson of coure.

I would say the aav is corect (I would gave him 5.75M) so not much of a difference, but he got to much term.

Why couldn't the Leafs have gotten him for only a 3rd?

This is going to age poorly... Columbus seems to trying to be going all in without the talent already there to make it make sense

He's a great defenseman, money is spot on. Term is what makes this not a great contract. Depending on the clauses, the contract could be worse(if he has a NMC).

Because then they would have been stuck with this contract until Severson is 36.

Like Severson, but this is a bad contract. 8 years is crazy. Also really funny that CBJ has pushed their chips in on the blueline this week and their blueline is still mediocre.

Aren't the Leafs trying to win now? Not in 8 years?

What Columbus needs to do, is rebuild IMO, not stay mediocre for the next decade because the GM wants too keep his job

This is the identical contract the Flames paid Weegar (6.25 x 8) and both players are the same age. Term is likely too long on both contracts. The difference is Weegar is much better defender than Severson (IMO).

Just because they are in win now mode, doesn't mean they should start handing out bad contracts. I'm sure they can find pieces that are a little more temporary than long term that don't cost 6.25M for 8 years.

Would you take Severson at 6.25/4 years?
