He has played quite poorly for a couple years, but a less than 3rd round pick for a guy in his 20s who may be a legit NHL goaltender, is likely still good value...

Look, he’s a cheap stopgap for a couple years until Chrona develops or someone else. Grier said the Sharks plan to pick a goaltender in the draft so lets see. Blackwood still has upside and could turn out to be a steal.

I get that you're joking but even if that happens there's a strong chance the Sharks wouldn't have used the pick on the same player. For instance, the Pavelski pick was "San Jose Sharks (from Atlanta via Philadelphia)" but the Thrashers had moved up from 205 to 203 to get Dennis Loginov and I wouldn't be surprised if he was still there at 205.

SJ is doing what happened to them twice with Kipper being traded away for cheap and same with Hill. Hopefully this time they are on the better end and Blackwood becomes the new Kipper/Hill

Kipper trade landed us Vlasic who before his decline was one of the top shutdown defenders in the world along with a Gold in olympics and World Cup of Hockey. Just pointing out that everyone looks at the Kipper trade with harsh eyes not even realizing the return was Vlasic.

But yes I see your point.

New Jersey wins this deal. Over the last 3 season 61 goalies have played at least 50 games. Blackwood among them ranks...

SV% - 58th
GSAA - 54th
HDSV% - 60th
HDGSAA - 60th

His QO is $3.4 million and reports were he wasn't going to get a QO from NJD, thus making him a UFA. NJD got a 6th round pick for a guy that was going to be a UFA and has been one of the worst goalies in the NHL over the last 3 years.

On the one hand, a 6th round pick is essentially nothing.
On the other hand, Blackwood has been unplayable at the NHL level the last two years.

Call it a fair trade.
